I'm in the market for a new monitor and was wondering which of the two is more important and will provide better performance, with an emphasis on being future proof.

So as of present i have a 560ti GPU so playing at 1080p is fine for now but knowing that i'll be upgrading to the next gen GPUs in the future would i bottlenecking the card knowing i could be playing at a higher res or is 120hz more important and 1080p suffice for years to come? I play all kinds of games e.g RPGs, FPS, MMOs etc.

Summary: Which will provide better performance in the future that i will benefit from? Will 1080p be fine for years to come or is it worth investing in a higher res monitor?
This is for gaming purposes mostly.

Thanks!

Depends what kinda gamer you are really, if you interest is more casual gaming then a higher res, better quality panel would probably be of more value, if your a hardcore online gamer then there are few alternatives to a 120Hz TFT (other than going back to CRT).

I bought an lg 23" 120hz 3d monitor when they were on sale and I really hated it & went back to my DGM 24 & play at max res instead. I couldnt get away with the tn panel but I know I will have to go to it one day.

Well really i am neither hardcore nor casual.. I play games a lot but i don't compete majorly or anything. I play games such as BF3, Witcher 2, MW3, WoW etc and in the future will be playing Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, Bioshock infinite etc. Also what quality of panel would you suggest.

It's confusing because there are a lot of majorly conflicting opinions everywhere. I understand that it's subjective but i'm trying to figure whether 120hz is worth it or higher res will be better for the future..

I have both a 120Hz LG and a DGM VA panel. The LG is horrible to look at in general use even though it's fully calibrated with an x-rite eyeone. It's like going back 10 years in LCD tech!

The image in the DGM is far better, it's really night and day for quality.

Where the LG shines is fast paced action. Some of the jump, spin shoot bits of portal 2 are easier as the screen is constantly in sharp focus whereas the DGM seems noticeably blured at times making it more difficult to lock onto a target.

With L4D, Half life, Boarderlands etc I prefer the LG despite it's poor static image as once you're in a moving landscape mid action the technical picture quality becomes second to clarity of movement. I prefer the DGM for everthing else so that the one I choose for my 'working' PC and is the one I'm sat at now.

If I had to choose I'd take the DGM as gaming is only 20% of my PC use. You can't knock the LG though, it's a fast gaming monitor.

Thanks for the in-depth reply, most appreciated.

Thing is, i'll be using the monitor for 80% gaming and 20% general use. However i don't want a bad picture quality like you described but i do want a fast and smooth responsiveness. argghh..

I was in the same position as you a few week ago m8. I didn’t know whether to go for a quality IPS panel (60Hz) or a fast 120hz TN panel.

I use my PC 95% for face paced gaming like COD, BF with a little bit of slower paced stuff like Skyrim/Oblivion etc.
First thing to mention is that 120hz smoothness in fast paced games is absolutely astounding if you have only ever used 60hz in the past like me. Truly amazing.
I came from a Dell 2407 (1920x1200 res) which uses a quality WPA panel so I was worried that the lower res of 1900x1080 and the fact that a 120hz panel would be TN tech.
I went for the new Samsung SA750 120hz and I have been really surprised how good the image is, much better than what I was expecting and in some cases as good as IPS.
My advice would be if you like and spend most of your time playing face paced fps games then a good 120hz is your best option, for your average PC user then IPS is the way to go.

Does 60hz bother you? Did you ever use to play games at higher Hz with a CRT? If the answer to those are NO then don't bother.

I've had the DGM VA and loved it and have never found a monitor to wow me as much as that did since, but I now have the LG and love it and would never go back to a non-120hz server EVER!

As for the panel quality, I find its much better than I expected for a TN panel sure the viewing angles are crap but dead on it's perfect and I never use it at any other angle. I wish I bought two when the prices where low now.
