Hey all,

Does anyone have experience of upgrading from a 12400 to a 14600k or similar for gaming? I'm tempted by the current price but I'm not sure if I'd really even notice any difference in performance. All the benchmarks I've found online show pretty much no difference for gaming at 4K, and at lower resolutions a 12400 always seems to exceed 60fps at least.

Gaming is the only demanding thing I use my PC for, and I play a variety of different games, although simulation/RTS are rarities for me. Baldurs Gate 3 is in my backlog and possibly the most CPU-intensive game I'm likely to play.

I have a 7900 XT and primarily game at 4K on either my 120Hz LG C1 with VRR or at 4K60 on my projector. Alan Wake 2 is the only game I've played that really needed much tweaking to run smoothly. I'm happy with 60fps, although do notice the extra smoothness when playing up to 120fps.

I'm not currently planning to upgrade my GPU, although there's a small chance I might be tempted by the Nvidia 5000 series depending on price and performance. I currently run an old Corsair 750W PSU, though I have a new RM1000x PSU ready to install when I get around to it. My current CPU cooler is a Vetroo V5.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi.

Looking at the benchmarks at 4k you will gain around 10% on average more FPSs over the 12400 at 4K

Looking at the passmark comparison its almost double the performance overall and about 20% faster single core performance. That with the generational improvements i think you will see a great improvement in minimum frame rates. You might want to update the cooler tho but you can get a thermalright Peerless assassin for about £33.

I went from a 12100F to a 12600K and the difference was fantastic and was noticeable at how much better the minimum frame rates were along with decent higher overall performance.
