Thinking about getting a 125 - Trails bike for a bit of fun just wondered if any one had an idea on a good one, looking for about 500 quid i guess maybe a bit more, would drive it on a cbt. about town and some green laning too with my dad. any idea's?

Only real option for a roadgoing one at that money will be a DT125, they're meant to be really quite capable off road for what they are. Scuzi used to greenlane on one, I'm sure he'll be along soon enough to tell more :)

DT125, you can pick an old one uip for that price and they do go most places.. Hell ive taken mine where my mate took this CR250.. However it is a lot easier on a KTM 400 :p

I had an aprilia RX 125 and regret selling it. Scared the bejebus outta me, especially after being on a Speedfight 2 50cc (init bruv) lol! Got mine for bout 800 but was in pretty good nick but it did like to go through spark plugs!

You'll get a DT125 for that money. It'll be a bit shabby but should be enough to pass an MOT and keep you running. They're great bikes for green laning, I used to take mine offroad every weekend. I gave it some abuse but it never failed to impress. You'll be hard pressed to find a bike that will handle as well around green lanes, be as reliable and as cheap to run as a DT125.

A £500 bike will be pre emissions restriction so will respond to the power valve tweak and a full exhaust system along with a rejetted carb and air filter. That'll see you pushing quite a bit more power and give you a narrower but far more agressive power band.

In case you doubt their capability, here's a demonstration of me doing what I did every weekend with mine...

If you've any more specific questions just ask :)

do they do a dtr 125 as well?

I had a dr125 for a while, and it was ok, but it was a bit sluggish and heavy as it was a 4-stoke.

dt>dr

Aye the proper name is Yamaha DT125R. The Suzuki DR125 doen't even come close as it's quite heavy and sluggish due to the 4 stroke engine. IIRC it even came with drum brakes front and rear in earlier models too :(

The DR350 and DRZ400 are a different story though, awesome bikes

looks good, my dad has a suzki 250 ts in the back garden which he taught me to ride on. love yahammas and blue is my fav colour, insurance ok on them?

what age bike have the restrictions on then?

Yep, mine had drums all round... I would get it all muddy, and clean it with a jet washer when I was done... Only to find the front wheel had locked up next time I wanted to use it! The shoes would get stuck to the drum... Disks are much better. :)

I would love a DR350, but I need to pass my bike test first. It's on the ever growing to-do list.

IIRC they are all DT125R's. Mine is awesome fun, handles well, goes offroad fine and is cheap to insure, like 180quid a year cheap! :p You wont be disapointed.

I remember a DT125LC, not sure on differences though... my brother had one years ago i remember helping him open the 'power band' (or it could have been some type of restrictor?)

I think the LC was the first generation of liquid cooled DT's in the old shape and the name was changed to DT125R from the new shape (I think '89-ish onwards). Don't quote me on that though, it's been a while since I knew my stuff about the DT's.
