Hi all,

Looking for a bit of advice, currently driving a mk2 focus st3, however it's not very reliable and I have the feeling something else will break every time I drive it.

A bmw 125i had caught my eye,

Never really looked at bmw's before, can anyone offer any advice on what to look out for?

I'd like something that's as fast as the focus, fun, comfortable as I often do a 1000 mile round trip and not any worse on fuel than the focus

Thanks,

What's wrong with your ST? You must have bought a right dog If it keeps breaking as they are one of the most reliable hot hatches around when looked after.
And 11k on a 7yr old white Bmw that looks like a hairdressers car :p surely you can find something better than that for 11k. I doubt it's Gonna be very fun to drive either.

Haha, good point with the hairdresser car!

On the st, it's the drive shaft this time, few months ago it was the battery and alternator, oil filter housing before that, lower wishbones. I seem to have got all the common faults!

Bad luck with the ST getting the common faults like that. I might get rid of mine soon incase I get any of them lol. I've been lucky to have 9 months trouble free so far.
Have you not looked at the 330i coupe's? Much nicer looking car imo and seem to be slightly cheaper than the 1 series coupe of the same age.

My old corolla tsport felt so much better put together (not sure if that's a positive on Toyota, or a negative on ford), but 6 years and 70,000 miles and only a thermostat going has made me used to reliability!

I'll take a look at 330i coupe, thanks for the suggestion

Yea, I bet a short wheelbase RWD Coupe with a 220bhp 6 is super dull.

Sorry I should have known better than to say anything remotely bad about BMW on this forum :D i forgot they are the best cars money can buy.
The 1 series is not exactly built to be ragged round B roads though is it which is what most people describe as a fun car like say the new Fiesta ST.

Personally I really dislike the 1 series but the one thing an example like that does do well is be fun to drive. It's small, chuckable, decent power and a good chassis.

That red leather though. It does not go with the silver. Yak!
125i though, they are pretty fun! Steering across some of the bmw range has become a bit...numb of late. When I tried one I found it to be better. I don't know why as I believe a lot of the components are shared.
Take it for a spin, you really won't be disappointed.

I quite like the red, it's something a bit different to the usual black seats.

Is there any options I should make sure it has?

Guessing I can change the head unit to a double din system?

If you've repaired all the common faults with the revised parts then they're not going to fail again. I'd just keep it, better the devil you know.

Thats a fair comment, although there is still one more driveshaft that can fail

Reading the cylinder liner horror stories on the forums isnt filling me full of confidence either

I see you're concerned about reliability, but I also assume you'll be paying for some sort of BMW warranty?

At the price you're looking at for the car in the link, you're so close to decent 135i territory. That with a decent level of warranty cover might be an idea?

I'm not sure if I'd bother with the warranty, I'd be more likely to keep some money to one side if something does break, although it is certainly something I would look into.

I cant see any 135i's for anything less than £16k?
