right so i bought a new mobo etc

m5a 78L-M LX3
which supports a max CPU wattage of 95

however i didnt check this when i put my Phenom ii 965 black edition in...

Its been in for about 2 hours now.

Regardless i orded a new one which will be here tomorrow. one that is supported by the mobo...

FX-4100

but now im worried about the damage i have already caused even though im still using this PC right now..

dont worry i have a 970a d3 that doesnt support an 8350 but yet the 8350 works apart from the freezes.....which is problem when you cant return the motherboard or afford a new one

well i got this board mega cheap, so if i can get an 8+1 power delivered mobo a decent one that supports that then ill send it back.. Suggestions?

Dont want to push it, make sure you match the CPU and Mobo propely not proving enough power to the CPU would stress the motherboard and CPU isnt going to work properly maybe BSODs

the board is fine for the fx 4100. I wouldn't try anything beefier though. A 6 core or 8 core fx and it will struggle and throttle your CPU. If it was damaged, it simply wouldn't turn on. most boards throttle the CPU before it damaged them.

If your looking for a better board to take higher power am3+ chips, the bare minimum i would suggest is asus evo. Though it only has 6+2 phasing, asus MOFSETs are better than MSIs or asrocks. If you have more budget, the Sabertooth is a great board, though a Crosshair Formula (not the Z) could be had second hand for cheaper and is a much better board.

You're relying on the factor of safety built into the board. It's difficult to say whether that'll work out well for you or not. Does the board allow you to undervolt the processor? If so, that'll dramatically reduce the power consumption, and may bring you under the 95W spec.
