Considering a video card upgrade. I have a 19" "square" LCD. I've never been tempted by widescreen...

Ignoring Crysis, what level of card would I need to run most stuff at that resolution at high-ish settings ?

I should add: low noise is important when not playing a game. I don't mind if the fans spins up during a game, that's expected

I've never owned one but i know that all new ones have a bigger fan than when they were first released so they should be a bit quieter now.

Might be worth giving the 9600gt a look too. Nearly £20 cheaper, at such a low res I'd say the 9600gt is better value for money.

The performance gap between the 8800gt and the 9600gt is not much at all, OC the 9600 and you will have a card that beats the stock 8800gt, cheapest 9600 on here is just £99 and is great bank for buck. I use rivatuner to control fan speed and to OC.

Id get the 8800 GT as its got more streams, will always be faster.:)

Used to have a GT running at that res here, you get 8800 GTX performance at 1280x1024, give or take a frame here, there.

I finally went for the 3870XT on "this week only"
HIS ATI Radeon HD 3870 XT ICEQ3 512MB GDDR4 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail

What a beautifully crafted piece of kit !!

In the end, all the comments of "hot and noisy" and "95C GPU temps after 1 hr of gaming" put me off the 8800GT and 9600GT. I already have an intolerably noisy 7600GT and didn't want to repeat the experience. Fitted the HIS card, and oh what joy, nice and quiet and even when gaming it is still quiet. Happy with the purchase for just over £100.

i have a 8800GTS and i've used riva tune to set the fan speed at 50% and i cant hear it over my other fans and runs prety cool despite being in quite a cramped case.

I bought an 8800GT and indeed it did have a very noisy fan.

Forked out for a Thermalright HR-05 and to be honest, with the temps this gives and the overclocking I have been able to do, I have never looked back.

+1 for BFG 8800

reason for the vote is cos i have one and game at that resolution.

can wak the settings up to max on everything and is fairly quiet.
