Currently looking to buy 12GB of DDR3 to go with my i7 920 D0

Now I know ram prices are silly, but without the ram, I cant use the system

Is there a massive difference between 1333mhz and 1600mhz ram?

Will I be able to overclock at all with 1333mhz ram?

Thanks

What speed are you think about O/Cing the i7 920 D0?

I found that with 12GB I was limited to 1333mhz memory speed.

It does depend on your CPU if you can run at 1600mhz with 12GB.

What is the diffrence in price between 1333mhz and 1600mhz ram?

Hi Simon, the difference is about £30

Its around £270 for the 1600 stuff, I was going to fit it with a H50 and see what I could get, 3.2-3.4Ghz would see a nice boost?

12gb of 1600mhz ram here, flatly refusing to run at 1600 so it's at 1200. If it wasn't for the pretty dominator heatsinks I'd be annoyed I hadn't bought the 1333 stuff.

The lowest ram multiplier available on most boards is x6, so 1333mhz will allow 222Mhz bsck before you have to overclock the ram. As this is roughly the limit of a board with 6gb of ram you won't be limited in any way by the ram frequency. Overclocking with 12gb of ram is difficult though, thoroughly doing my head in. 4ghz wasn't any particular stress though, you should make it well over 3.2 even with all three slots full.

Put mine from 1066 to 1600 yesterday, I had to slacken the timings for this to take - tbh I don't know if it is any different! super Pi was inconclusive, haven't had time to run a load of benchies. My processor speed did not change (4.2GHz) so 1066 RAM will do with a lower multi if there's a saving to be had!

Ultimately, I doubt I'd spend the extra on 1600 RAM again given the opportunity to start from scratch again .. but hey, that is with the luxury of having it and trying it out and not desiring it so if you need it who's to say otherwise :D

Should have got 12GB but that'll be the next purchase!

I had 12 GB of 1600 Mhz patriot ram and it refused to work at 1600 Mhz.

Then I bought 3 lots of the OEM Geil 2133 Mhz ram and they work at 1800 Mhz.

They are on offer this week too for £70 per pair, and are definately worth the money if you want to use 12 Gb.

Yea 3x dual channel kits will work fine, you just wont ever get 2000+ Mhz with 6 modules installed, those Geil ones are better than 1600 Mhz modules.
