12v CPU plug obstructed by heat pipe?

Hello all,

Everything arrived for my X99 build yesterday, and I've now got almost everything installed, and went to wire it up. From what I can see, the top heat pipe on the Gigabyte X99-UD5 seems to be blocking the 12V CPU socket. I'm desperately hoping that I don't need to pull everything apart and RMA the board. Any ideas?

Try plugging it in before you go any further with the build?

Sorry, should have mentioned that I have tried plugging in both the plugs from the superflower PSU and the 3-way power splitter that came with the mobo - can't seem to persuade it to go in.

I think the angle of the photo makes it look not as tight as it is.

looking at piccies of this board the heat pipe looks to be further away than on your board. not by a massive amount but at least 2mm

Ah - thanks for posting and bothering to take a photo - much appreciated. I just asked the same question on the other thread!

It is at least encouraging that not all the boards in OCUK's batch do the same thing.

Seeing nothing but problems with the cheaper gigabyte x99 boards so far.

Actually, scare stories about VRMs going pop on ASUS boards scared me back to Gigabyte, especially as my old UD4 running a 2700k is and was rock-solid, even for days on end of number-crunching.

I do understand that ASUS have some slightly better features and layouts, but hadn't heard of any actual problems with the Gigabyte boards?

Seems to be the way now with gigabyte

back in the day their UD3, etc. boards were just feature cut versions of the big boards which was great - you got a high grade but but without the frills board for a good price - but of late their budget boards have really been budget boards with lower grade capacitors, downgraded phases/mosfets, etc. etc.

Sure, but the UD5 is hardly low-end!

nothing wrong with the board,could be with the cooler though? miss aligned heatpipe/manufacture fault?

it will run with just a four pin power plug

can you rotate the cooler so the fans face upwards?

(bend the pipe upwards/out of the way slightly/carefully)?

Thanks very much for the reply. Sadly, the heat pipe is actually part of the motherboard heatsink assembly for the VRMs. It won't budge with gentle movement and I'm not going to start unscrewing things.

Also, with the 5960X using something like 200W when over clocked, I don't want to mess with just using a weedy 4pin - I think it might melt even if it worked at first.

ahh that's different then,i thought it was the cooler

yh its a board defect if its blocking the power socket,can rma it and show/email them the pictures

I know the boards heatpipes do come off you could remove it/bend it slightly so it misses the socket but tbh you shouldn't have to mess

Thought I would just complete the loop with an outcome. The board was defective, and while I don't know if the whole batch was, it was definitely not the only one, and the UD5 seems to have been taken down from sale for the moment. Shame as even though I never booted it, I quite liked the board, with the lit up backplate and generally muted colours.

Still, can't fault OCUK one bit - assessed and refunded within hours of it arriving back, and they gave me free Saturday shipping on the replacement I bought. The new ASUS X99-Deluxe was shipped in 19 minutes!

Only thing I need to do now is to find some thermal paste as I had already installed my cooler on the CPU. So I dropped by the purple store that begins with P on the way home. Expected a rubbish selection of TIM, but was not prepared for them to say that they don't even sell any. Now that is a new low...

That's exceptionally kind, but the real aim is to get some sorted tomorrow so I can build immediately. I'm sure I'll find some somewhere, probably in the shop beginning with M that used to have a catalog that would break your foot if you dropped it.

I have to say though that your offer really has made my day - so rare to have a complete stranger prepared to help out like that without even asking.
