Thirteen Reasons Why, based on the best-selling books by Jay Asher, follows teenager Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) as he returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers a group of cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) -his classmate and crush-who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah unfolds an emotional audio diary, detailing the thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, Thirteen Reasons Why weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect viewers.

Just finished watching this new NetFlix series, very powerful edge of the seat story with superb acting. Highly recommended,

I watched the first 20 minutes or so felt a bit preachy and wasn't really pulling me in though going to give it another go as I hadn't really given it enough time to see where it was taking it with the tapes, etc.

10 episodes in and finding it very good. The lead actor really sells it and its one of the most intricately crafted shows i've seen in a while. It's not perfect and whether the ending lives up to the rest of the series remains to be seen but it is really welll done.

Very good adaptation, with all the (minor) downsides of the original story (very nineties ending). Surprisingly strong performances from the young cast. notbad.gif

Watched 6 episodes of this yesterday, I'm really enjoying it. Has a bit of a Life Is Strange vibe about it, a game I liked a lot.

Just finished the final episode and wow, what a series. I personally felt it treated the various themes and issues it dealt with really well; it'd have been easy for them to be trivialised for the purposes of "entertainment" or treated them like a teen drama series, but the writers faced them head-on. Quite a few episodes were pretty hard to watch.

Really strong series, deserves more attention!

I do feel a few of the episodes could have been merged and maybe some parts tightened up a bit but it came together really well and agree with the comments on the final episode

Yeah, that was really uncomfortable viewing, most other shows would shy away from that.

I was shouting at the Mum not to open the door! :(

It was pretty powerful, My Mr's could not look at the time, I had to force myself,I feel this is something that should be shown in high schools so kids can see the effect of it all.

Seems this fantastic series is getting a lot of flack for “sensationalised” suicide
Personally I don't see it, my main take away from the series was the power of consequences from your actions & inaction's!

Netflix show condemned for 'romanticising' teenager's suicide

Mental health groups have criticised a new Netflix drama for its “sensationalised” portrayal of a 17-year-old’s suicide, which they say could encourage young people to take their own lives.

The Samaritans, psychiatrists, and mental health campaigners claim 13 Reasons Why could prompt troubled young people to copy the suicide of its central character, Hannah Baker.

“We have a responsibility to protect children and teenagers,” said Dr Helen Rayner, a psychiatrist specialising in children and adolescent mental health who is also a spokeswoman for the Royal College of Psychiatrists. “Dramatic and detailed portrayals of suicide needlessly put vulnerable young people at risk of copycat behaviour as they see how to carry out harmful or potentially fatal acts.

“Graphic depictions of suicide may only influence a small number of viewers, but the consequences can be tragic.”

I was gonna say are these the same plonkers that claimed 'Trainspotting' glamorised drug taking but having now looked at the article it's coming from credible heavy hitters in the Psychiatrists field!
Although I do find the line about 'see how to carry out harmful acts' pretty ridiculous, people who are sadly in a horrifically dark place and contemplating suicide aren't not doing it because they don't know how too.

Got episode 12-13 to go, great so far. But the series felt a little stretched out around episodes 6-8, got interesting again though and cant wait to finish it.

And in other news, Requiem For A Dream TOTALLY got me in to heroin... /s

on the whole, i enjoyed the show although i did find some characters and their mannerisms rather annoying at times. But then again, they are portraying (for the most part) privileged American teens so it's hardly surprising that they're annoying. I found the last episode very sad actually. I think the door seems slightly open for season 2 as well, although not quite sure how that would work

I hope not, it's based on a book, and this is where the story ends, dragging it out for more seasons just belittles the whole thing.

A finite length to a story is what is missing from so many shows these days, they just drag it out if it is a cash cow, and then it gets cancelled.

Reports on NME and a few other questionable sources that it has been given the go ahead for a second season.
