1366 X58 Xeon 5650

Average prices for an x58 board seem to be around 110/120 at the moment! A rampage should fetch a bit more as it's considered one of the better ones

I was considering this route but now thinking hold out and grab a cheap z97 setup instead

can anyone tell me why in a single thread ( super pi ) voltage is 1.41 and it doesn't bsod then I run cinebench multithread and the vcore is at 1.325 . any lower and it bsod . it seems to me that the chip likes pain = voltage

That voltage article is true. But it has always been true.

We are talking about a 60 quid cpu on a six year old platform here. Keep things in perspective :)

Keep the temps reasonable and try not to completely disable vdroop.

try going in your bios and load optimised settings . reboot then try a small overclock . that's what I had to do .

Yes, tried that but hit a brick wall at BCLK = 150. I gave up in the end. Was looking at some used boards but here in the states they are selling for as much as a Z97 board. I picked up an ASRock Extreme6 for $124 yesterday along with a 4790k and 16GB or RAM for a total around $575. Agree with others that this is only worth going after if you already have a compatible motherboard. The UD4P is not one of those unfortunately. Might be worth starting a database of good/bad X58 motherboards for this purpose.

Read up on the Extreme6 last night and a bit disappointment that it cuts the 2nd PCIe slot to x4 if you have a M.2 device plugged in the Ultra M.2 (32GB/s) port since I have an SLI setup. Guessing that will kill performance. Might go back and pick up the Fatal1ty Pro instead....

Thanks all for all the help and best of luck on your Xeon OCing!

There is something fundamentally cool about running a six year old platform without any real loss in performance in todays games and software.

Chugging nicely along with my GTX 970....Not changed the case for over a deacde...Akasa Ecplise 62 :p

Would got that right! I wish I was in that camp instead of being $600 poorer...

Peace

Dropped down to 4.37Ghz at 1.35v. To be honest, I dont see any real voltage spike. An hour of testing at load and it went to 1.36v under load but mainly hovered around 1.352v. Setting LLC to auto though does let it idle a bit lower at 1.344.

True but I'm quite fond of this CPU for some reason. I'd be more upset about destroying it than I would be over a more modern CPU which I'd spent more money on. :)

Thinking about it I suppose were getting to the point where a decent air cooler will still cool a CPU even at 'dangerous' voltages, which isn't somewhere we were when I last bought a cpu 5 years ago :)

What voltage are you running for 4.5 and what did you need for 4.4 and 4.2?

Going to have a check to see whether I've any bent pins today. If it can't be sorted (or looks too risky) I'm going to ditch 3-channel and buy 2x 4gb. It's been running just fine with 2x 2gb for a week now.

Update on my memory issues... turns out that as expected I had a single bent pin on the socket :(

Cue big magnifying glass, a pin and a lot of nerve, bent it back, sorted, back to 6GB :)

I'll give it some time to settle and see whether it's now consistently okay before making it sweat

fingers crossed...

May look into getting one of theee. Still run a 930 in my second system, board is a p6 x58 de which i see will take one no problem.

Best 50 quid on PC hardware ( actually 30 quid after selling my 920) I have ever spent...Love this X58 system....Its retro chic but with the engine of Ferrari! :D

To many people through "old" stuff away these days...!:)

Owned two x58 setups, sold the one with the 920 but kept the 930 one. Since then ive been through ivybridge i5/i7, and several haswell i7's. For games they havent been a very big improvement over the 920 with a single gpu.

Yeah...Gives me a warm glow hearing that....Its nice to know us end users with money for the latest and greatest ,but resist ,can still enjoy our old kit without compromise.:)

In an odd way, I'm kind of fond of the old Massive Black monolith!:p see here with an Asus P5W DH....Got a H80 now on the xeon.
