1366 X58 Xeon 5650

I regret selling my 5650 and x58 combo, for some reason a 4670k with higher ipc seems like a downgrade, probably because in my mind I know I've lost those extra cores

I wish i had never upgraded. I replaced my bloodrage x58, i7 920 and crossfire 5850's with an AMD P2 1055t and 6970 :(

i've regretted that for years.

However i put a cheeky bid on a full pc auction on sunday and won. So I now have a new toy for the test bench.

The guts of the pc had an asus saberooth x58 board with an i7 960 and 6gb ram, and oem copy of windows 7 pro.

The antec 300 case, antec 600w modular psu, 500gb hd, gts 450, and i7 960 will all be offloaded to offset the cost.

i also picked up an x5660 for £49, i'm looking forward to see how it compares to my 4770k. it's all up and running on my coolermaster lab, with an ssd thrown in, just need to find my socket 1366 fitting for my aio corsair cooler, otherwise i'm going to have to dig out my old custom loop i used on the 920.

I'm looking forward to tinkering.

Foxconn boards are known not to work with the Xeon any way. Both the Bloodrage and Flaming Blade do not support the Xeon, so try not to feel so bad :)

It might have an extra instruction set or two, I can't remember. The only other difference is that it runs cooler, meaning you might be able to overclock it more (32 nm v 45 nm).

Thanks. I think my 3.8GHz 920 is doing okay tbh. I'm not sure I'd gain much. Still for £20/30 after selling the 920 it might be worth a play one weekend.

My 5670 runs the same temps @4.2 load that the 920 did at @3.8 ..
probably all in my mind but it just seems so much more snappy to open programs as well .

What settings are you running, if you don't mind me asking..

My 5670 is stable at 4.0, whenever I tried to get to 4.2 or whatever it just became unstable no matter what I tried, plus the h80i cooler was too damned noisy trying to manage those temps !

last week I got kill-a-watt to test power consumption for cpu only

i found a strange numbers with prime 95

x5670 @ 4.20Ghz 1.35v = 220 TDP
x5670 @ 4.51Ghz 1.42v = 350 TDP (so much) = 560w just for system gpu(amd r9 290) idle

Hi guys, jumped to the same boat, swapped my 920@4ghz to x5660.
first weekend to have a play with it.
managed to get to 4ghz without too much tweeking, but it's not what I want :D I need more, would be happy to achieve 4.4ish, but that might be too much to ask for. had it at 4.5 but that needed vcore of 1.46 but qpi/vtt was at 1.375, but the temp was going through the roof with air cooling. wish I had water cooling :/

Think about what you paid for it, the fact that it's designed to live in a server under constant load, TJmax being higher than standard consumer CPUs, etc. Just go for it.

Mine has been at 4.5 on air for ages now and it's fine. I think it hit mid 80s under load, just under 1.4v.

If the temps were just high whilst stress testing and you only use the rig for gaming I wouldn't worry too much your pc will never get as hot running a game :)

Quick question regarding overclocking (relative newb). If I'm using 1066 RAM am I stuck using ~177 as the BCLK as 6 is lowest divider for the RAM? Is my ram going to hold this overclock back?

For reference I'm using A Gigabyte UD5 board.

I'm feeling this right now. My lack of a 4GHz overclock is making me want to upgrade, but to nothing less than 6 cores. :(

You have a Xeon don't you ?

I'm on one right now (with another spare) but my motherboard is holding its overclocking back to a mild 3.7ghz. In most cases I'd change the mobo but matx x58 boards are rare and expensive it seems.

Ideally I'd like a 5820k but its a lot of money to sink in one go.
