13900KS stable when stressed, freezes or blue screens doing desktop type tasks

Hi folks, after a bit of advice please. I've been building PC's for a long while and overclocking them, my primary use case is iRacing and have a dedicated PC for it all connected up to a pretty extreme set of motion devices.

I've not built one for quite a while as my last was a 9900k which was good for 5Ghz and that has kept me good since 2019 so I've missed out on some of the newer options for tweaking. I'm also pushed for time with work and elderly parents so bought an OCUK bundle, Asus z790 Apex, 13900ks and 7600DDR5.

Its a custom loop with two 480mm rads and temps are good. When I stress test it or do some testing in iRacing it works well. I'm getting very frequent freezes or blue screens when doing desktop type tasks.

Just wonderered if you good people could give me some tips as to what to look at please?

Regards
Fred

Seems to suggest that you're having issues when the CPU is switching between power states, which power plan are you using?

Are you actually running the memory at 7600?

Are you using an existing SSD that functioned fine before?

I assume you've checked drivers, wireless, chipset, etc and had a look in the event viewer?

blue screens when doing desktop type tasks.

Any commonality in the blue screens, or do they show different error messages?

Hi, thanks for taking the time to respond.

I use process lasso, I seem to have less problems with the Bitsum Highest Performance power plan but its not perfect. Memory yes I am running at 7600 but I have tried it at 5600 and still see the same. SSD is new with the motherboard.

Blue screens are infrequent, freezing is more frequent. No consistency. Nothing seems to be wrong with drivers and event viewer isn't telling me anything useful.

Was the 13900KS CPU from OcUK pre-overclocked?

Sounds like you don't have enough voltage for the boost clock. The CPU will normally only reach the maximum boost clock when it is doing very light tasks and you'll normally only see it hit these speeds when it's idling. I've had the same issue as you overclocking my 13700K; perfectly stable during many hours of games but then freezing or blue screening during desktop use.

Are you running any non standard BIOS settings? Sounds to me like your voltages are boosted for higher clock speeds (LLC?) but are not sufficient for lower clock speeds!?! Maybe reset BIOS to optimised settings and try again. Are you running the latest BIOS as they normally come with system stability updates.

The blue screen message will guide you to the problem but since you also encounter freezes I'd have to guess most likely culprit is the cpu not getting enough voltage at idle states. Are you running stock?

Smells like CPU is not getting enough voltage for highest frequency states 5.9-6.0 GHz. These frequencies are not hit when testing full load and very rarely in games.

I would use OCCT and test single thread non-AVX variable load to pinpoint it.

Edit: Bencher beat me to it
