Hi guys,

I have 2 Ethernet (or what I thought were both Ethernet) ports on my PC. I have always used one to connect to the Internet which has worked fine. However, I am now in need of another Ethernet port and I have this spate '1394' port, but after some searching it seems that this is a firewire port? Can it not be used for connecting a modem? I've plugged my modem in but no status is displayed?

Any help much appreciated.

Are you needing an extra ethernet port to connect to another PC? If so, you can use IP over firewire.

not really, I need to connect another modem as I have 2 ISP's.
I have connected up a spare NIC but ideally would like to use the on-board one. It's very odd, it just says connected all the time even without a lead plugged in.

Failing that, would a PCIE NIC act the same as a normal NIC?

Firewire can network 2 pcs together using a firewire cable. But not using an ethernet cable. Yes, a PCI-E NIC is just the same. Just a different mobo slot. What are hoping to do with 2 ISPs?

Thanks, I have a spare PCI NIC in at moment but I need that slot free really as it sits too close to my GFX cooler. I have just ordered a cheap PCIE one.

1 modems is used for home use whist the other is business.
