Or...just an extra big house deposit? But we won't go into that in the motors forum haha.

For a while now I've been looking at Fiesta ST's. A good blend of fun, economy/low ownership costs excluding purchase price, reliability (next to no issues), manufacturers warranty at this budget. A good little car to use day in, day out.

However, there is no escaping I am hitting 35 in a few months and I do still question if a Fiesta is a "good look". Not that I usually get hung up on stigma but I am sure you understand.

The fall back for a while has always been a much newer Golf than my last one. Grown up's hot hatch perhaps. I don't need a car which storms down the road to a massive degree and I probably do 16k a year so the GTD is borderline... I like those just as much as I do GTI's to be fair!

Obviously the other motor I like are BMW 1 Series Coupe's but I would be spending far less on one of those if I went there.

What are people's thoughts on the Golf vs. Fiesta at this budget. Golf out of warranty... a smart, subtle looking hatch but are they unreliable, niggly and generally a pain? Or worth choosing over the Fiesta despite obviously being older, higher milage and if so, why?

We love these kinda discussions.... go!

Don't get a worse car just because you are worried about what people think about you or because you think they are common.

I have seen them driven by all ages , and of course they are common for a reason...because they are brilliant.

But as others have said, get on the property ladder first :p

In all fairness the house deposit thing is kinda a seperate entity so I have that covered :)

The Golf, is not so much a worse car, in fact perhaps a better car for just pootling around in, nice smooth drive. But the Fiesta being so new and with warranty at that budget makes it very hard to ignore considering the kind of cars I am into :)

I've been having similar thoughts but always come back to the thought that 10k+ is a stupid amount of money to put into a car when on the horizon of a house purchase.

Perhaps better to consider a new Fiesta on some sort of PCP deal if you're that keen on a newer motor?

I would expect a reasonable PCP to have less effect on a potential mortgage than 10k less deposit.

If you have it in cash, it absolutely shouldn't be a "separate entity" especially as you already own a functioning hot hatch.

Spending 13k on something now that will be worth a fraction of that in a few years time, when it could actually be put into equity in an appreciating asset seems like something you might regret. So yeah, house deposit

Stormster, as your posts consistently remind me of my myself when I couldn't stop buying and selling cars every 5 minutes I can assure you this, house first and once you get one cars will become second to everything and you might even do what I did and just get something boring because you realise just how much money you've thrown away over the years

Iain, I sold my Focus last weekend so I am hot-hatch-less. I can see what you are all saying. I don't need anything fancy really... at the moment I've bought a MK4 Astra to run around in and it does the job of being fairly comfy and getting me from A-B quite well... maybe I should see about a MK5 Golf GT TDI or something in that kind of range. It's hard to take a step back, but as has been said, I have chucked some money away over the years trying to perfect most cars I've had, I am obsessed with trying to get them "as new", it's expensive...and impossible :D

Fair enough if you need a car, but 13k is a really big chunk of cash and would make a significant difference to mortgage payments. In a few years, if interest rates have gone up when you need to be remortgaged - you'll be looking at the 5k car on your drive wishing it was 15 in equity in the house! Like relentless, I've chopped and changed a lot too and partly because I really struggle to justify putting big chunks of cash into a car when I still have a mortgage to pay. I could look at my car history and see that I've not really "moved up"... I could be running around in a 30k BMW not a 2k jag by now. But since getting on the property market I've moved from a 1 bed flat to a nice 2 bed house and have recently knocked 10 years off my mortgage term.

I bought a fiesta st in December and I'm 51, I was going to get another bike as I was missing a good thrash, after test driving it I thought that's it, I don't need another bike as this goes like stink, it makes me laugh every time I drive it.

What makes you laugh about it? They aren't even as quick as a Civic Type R are they that you can pick up for 3k?

Make me laugh because if is just great fun to drive, never been a car nut, bought my first one when I was 48 and only ridden bikes before that, I don't care that there are faster cars, at my age it's fast enough.
