Any suggestions for an air cooler i7/i5 would prefer a non behemoth as the motherboard I just picked up is tight around the VRMS, Asus Rog Strix z690-a Gaming Wifi D4

For £30 the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 se is the performance king , should fit but it's not small.

Really depends on which CPU you get as to cooler choice unless you got room for an aio.. what's your case ?

Depends if xx600, 700 or 900 - the Peerless, Noctura whatever the 15 model is and Dark Rock 5 will cope (and it is cope) with up to xx700 but for xx900 you really want a decent AIO.

I'm running a 14700K with the Dark Rock 4 and it is OK for anything outside of extreme multi-threaded benchmarks but will lose about 0.5-1% performance to thermal management under extreme multi-thread benchmarks unless I max the fans, but I value quiet and have had too much hassle with AIOs in the past.

If it's a non k series cpu or a 13600k/14600k then I would be looking at the Thermalright Phantom Spirit PS 120SE. It has a extra heatpipe over the Peerless Assassin and cools a tad better plus if you went for the ARGB version (the fans are excellent) it's actually cheaper than the PA120 at just under £30. If you are looking at a 14700k/13900k/14900k I would be looking at a AIO to keep the temps under control. Thermalright also do those and like the air coolers are cheaper than other brands.

Yeah I have the big noctua on a 13600k... i wouldn't want anything less able to cope with the heat, and thats 'only' an I5.

If I was buying a cooler today it would probably be the Thermalright Phantom Spirit PS 120SE, as it's much cheaper thean the noctua for equivelent (for arguments sake) performamnce.

Not cheap but I've gone for a Noctua NH-U12A on my past two builds.

This was on a 13900KS and now a 14900KF. I know many say aio's are needed but that depends on your usage. Yes if you want over 42k points on cinebench with no throttling maybe, but for real world tasks and gaming I've had zero issues.

Works a treat and doesn't block anything or cause compatibility issues of any kind.

You can get far cheaper coolers but with Noctua you are guaranteed great build quality, quiet fans and good customer service that will send out bracket hardware each time a new socket releases.

I have a Noctua DH15 cooling my 13700k. It is, of course, a behemoth.

Thanks chaps, was thinking of going 13600k or 14600k

Do you really need to go Intel? Look at AMD for less power-hungry CPUs.

Having used my share of air coolers, I can say that Thermalright builds quality products that aren't far off Noctua in the heatsink department.

The fans aren't necessarily the best, but they're more than ample and obviously can be replaced.

I would recommend the Thermalright Phantom Spirit, it's basically the same thing as the Peerless Assassin but with an extra heatpipe for the same price (£30ish).

For those on a tight budget, there's also a five heatpipe (vs four) version of their Assassin King cooler for £15.

Well I got an excellent deal off Gumtree, a White 400D Airflow from Corsair, a White 850x Corsair PSU, and an ASUS rog strix z690-a gaming wifi d4 for £150, So I kinda already committed to Intel.
