Hello. One of the kids is off to uni this year and needs a new Windows laptop. I'm out of my depth in the laptop space so I thought I'd ask here.

It needs to be portable so something reasonably lightweight. It doesn't need to flip or act as a touchscreen/tablet or anything like that, and will be used for essays, general internet, media consumption, and some moderate gaming (so no new AAA, but lots of indie titles and older games on Steam). A nice screen, and decent typing experience would be appreciated! Our combined budget is £1200ish.

Thanks!

Lenovo Ideapad Pro 5 Gen 9 14" AMD
RTX 3050 GPU if you stay with 16GB RAM; with 32GB it's Radeon 680M IGPU.
2.8k OLED screen
Under £1000

I've had an older Ideapad Pro 5 for four years and I'm thinking of replacing it with this one.

There's a version with Intel's Ultra 9 185 for a little more but it loses the RTX 3050 option.

Thanks man, that looks like a great shout. In my (admittedly brief) research so far, Lenovo keeps popping up as being good all round machines.

Pulled the trigger on this this morning. The only negative is they're warning of a 2-3 week wait (I'm not in the UK), but it definitely ticks all our boxes!

OLED screens on laptops are so nice to have...brilliant even, as theres basically no colour shift if you are viewing from sub-standard angles as you often do with laptops, and it has that OLED vibrance and pure black too... should be a nice machine.
I have an asus expert book, 13.9" OLED, 11th gen i5, 8gb ram, only onboard graphics as I won't do any real gaming on it other than old/indie stuff. Its the best laptop ive ever had.

One thing though, take time to understand or don't turn off any screen protection software that should probably come bundled with it, to prevent image retention if doing a lot of desktop work, etc.

What spec did you go for in the end?

I'm looking at this laptop too but not sure whether to go with AMD (integrated graphics or rtx 3050) or look at the Intel (5i) version of it.
