Hi
Just starting to put together a new build for gaming (and some programming etc.)

I already have the following components from my current pc:

Radeon 5870
Crucial 128gb SSD
Monitor, keyboard etc
Spare license for win7

The additional components I am planning on:

Asus Rampage II Extreme Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard £257.99
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - OEM £203.99
Geil Black Dragon 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Triple Channel (GB36GB1333C9TC) £122.99
Corsair HX 650W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650HXUK) £94.99
Fractal Design Define R2 Midi Tower Case - Black Pearl £79.99
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £64.99
Titan TTC-NK85TZ Fenrir CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775/LGA1366) £32.99
Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £15.99
3 x Sharkoon Silent Eagle 1000 120mm Fan - 3/4 Pin £30.63

Sub Total : £769.84
Shipping : £10.50
VAT : £136.56
Total : £916.90

- Am planning on i7 so that I have the option of crossfire later on.
- Am considering the Corsair H50 instead of the Fenrir if it is quieter. Alternatively, I may replace the stock Fenrir fan...

What do you think?

Id go for the H50, get a slightly better optical drive, the samsungs have a patchy track record (Sony's are most popular atm) and if you want the option of going xfire later look at an 850W PSU

Good point on the psu,thks.

Ok, how does this look?
(I have added in the gfx and ssd that I have already bought).

Does anyone know if the Rampage will fit inside the R2? I have read that is an oversized atx board?

I can confirm it does fit, but it covers up all the cable management holes, so you have to be a bit creative with the ATX power - I couldn't get the side back on if it went behind the motherboard tray. Maybe consider a P6T Deluxe instead?

I'm using the same PSU to power 5870 crossfire, so that'll be fine.

ok, thanks. I am really struggling with the motherboard now. I guess I need to read some more reviews.

I also think I am going to go with a megahalem and some GT fans rather than the Corsair H-50.

I have also started thinking that I should wait for the i7 930 to come out, either to get one instead or to see what it does to pricing.

Like already said, go for a higher Wattage PSU.
And for future proofing, water cooling is the way to go since they can also cool Graphics cards and most fans on them are VERY loud.

I'd go for the h50, it's just as good as the high end air coolers but generally a lot quieter depending on the fans you use.

That looks like a fantastic list of components. Especially the ssd-its like giving your pc some redbull.

Ok, In the morning I am going to pull the trigger on the following:

- Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz
- Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B
- Asus P6X58D Premium Intel
- Corsair TR3X6G1600C7 - 6GB (3x2GB) XMS3
- Fractal Design Define R2 Midi Tower Case - Black Pearl
- Corsair HX 850
- Samsung F3 1TB HDD
- Asus Xonar D2X PCI-E
- 2 x Scythe Gentle Typhoons 1450 for heatsink
- Sony AD-7240S-0B
- 2 x Fractal Design 120mm Silent Cooling Fan

Anything missing (other than gfx and ssd)?

thks
