So im in the market for a monitor upgrade from my 24" 1080p screen,

budget is around £450, size im after is 27-28 inches, the dilemma im trying to decide between is whether to take a lower res IPS or a 4k TN, (unfortunately the 4k IPS screens are close to double the price), my current two frontrunners are the below

im guessing some people here will have experience with both, and hoping there opinions can steer me one direction or the other.
Ill be upgrading my 670 later in the year so im not worried about gaming performance at 4k (happy to upscale from 1080 in games till i get a new card)

the vertical viewing angles of my current TN panel do annoy me at times (i look up at it while watching films), hence why i was wanting IPS

It's hard to recommend 4K at present. The GPU tech isn't there, and even though you say you'll be upgrading that, there's every chance that by the time you do, there will be far better 4K monitors around than what you can get today. 4K is not mature yet, very much in its infancy. 1440p is the sweet-spot right now, and will be for some time. The Dell is a good monitor, but you may want to look at faster panels if that's a concern for gaming. The best gaming IPS monitor, based on the recent review, would almost certainly be the Acer Predator XB270HU but it's over your budget and not available until April. Still, could be worth saving up for. Price may even drop a bit come release. :)

U2715H all the way. I have a U2515H and I literally could not be happier with it (unless it was 120Hz, I guess). Coming from a TN panel, I never want to go back. Especially at 27 inches where you will get colour shift in the corners of the monitor unless you sit quite far away from it - at such a distance that the difference in pixel density between 4K and 1440p will become hard to tell.

Response times are not an issue for me. A 5ms panel vs an 8ms panel will make literally no difference to your gaming experience whatsoever. I have no idea why the PC gaming community has built monitor response time up to be such a massive issue when it really isn't. 1ms to 8ms does seem like a big jump in response time but I guarantee you that you would not be able to notice the difference unless the panels are side-by-side, running the same game, off the same computer at the same time.

Sorry, that topic just winds me up a bit haha.

From someone who has had both i returned the UHD TN and stuck with my 1440p IPS, if I had the GPU power to run Ultra @60fps @4k I would keep the TN if you only game but for me the color shift + accuracy and only medium settings killed it for me. With the 144hz ips acer 1440p coming that is probably the monitor that rules them all atm.

Have to admit I've avoided acer in the past, maybe they've gotten better?

I'm very much the same. Had an Acer monitor many years ago which was pretty dire (albeit it was one of the basic screens) but they do look like they're releasing some nice things at the moment.

As for the ops question, I'd stick with 1440p IPS. Made the same switch 1080p TN to IPS and not looked back. I'll personally wait for at least a couple of years before jumping on the 4K bandwagon, most due to lack of (affordable/single card solution) GPU horsepower.

does look nice but its a bit pricey, if i had that much id just plump for 4k IPS, the Benq 32" or similar as im not really much of an FPSer so the high refresh would be wasted on me

seems to be a landslide for a lower res IPS then tbh, gaming is a secondary concern to video, programming and crisp text when working from home,

Moved from 1440 ips to 4k tn.

Not for me!

Am now back with the 1440 ips.

Much nicer exoerience:)

Give 4k a few years and reasonable price/responsive ips panels l will try again but for now? As said not for me.

Hi, just my tuppence worth, I'm happily gaming away on my 28"Aoc 4K Tn panel with a single R9 290. However it would appear I am a dying breed, I don't require 60+ Fps in fact I don't care what the fps are as long as its smooth. There are several games which are 'playable' at 3840X2160 and smooth and funnily enough I find if I sit right in front of my monitor you wouldn't know it was TN and not Ips, do most people not sit right in front of their monitor when gaming or are they at 178 degrees, strange really. Currently playing Far Cry 4 on high settings (looks amazing at 4K ) and its smooth. There are a lot of comments on here along the lines of, You need 2/3/4 top cards to play at 4K, absolute nonsense I say, unless you demand 60+ Fps. Nothing wrong with TN at 4K either. :D:p

Well, I'm enjoying my Acer 4k monitor immensely, i don't have issues running games at 60fps.

There is a bit of colour shift if I'm not sitting looking directly at the screen but when I'm actually using it i don't see it.

Games at 4k are the biggest improvement in gaming I've seen in a long time and thats after having 120hz and 3d vision.

G-sync helps quite a bit if fps drops below 60fps (1 card being used etc) and smooths the whole thing out
