Hi all!;)

Recently I built myself a new system (had AM2 prior to this) with such specs:
Ryzen 5 1600
Asus ROG Strix B350
Corsair Vengeance 3000MHz RAM (only 8GB but will add more later)
Msi GTX1080 Armor
Corsair 750M PSU

While it crushes all the games in Ultra settings, I am still using an old monitor from around 10+ years ago.

Soon I'll be searching for a new monitor and was wondering, is above hardware enough to run 1440p with 144Hz refresh rate smoothly?
I did a bit of research and videos but come accross mixed opinions.
I dont mind lowering down several settings from Ultra if needed, considering new screen should be a major step forward to quality of image anyway.

Or should I go for 1440p with 60Hz?
I just think GTX1080 is a bit of an overkill for 1080p gaming and 1440p 144Hz seems like a perfect spot, bear in mind I'll be looking something around 27" screen size.

Appreciate any opinion in advance.:D

You should be fine, I'm running 1440p 144hz with a GTX1070 and an i5-3570k and can max most games without too much difficulty.

Thanks guys, 1440p I wasnt so worried about, it's refresh rates that I have no clue about and how much performance they eat out of the card.

Will be on a hunt for the right monitor then:)

Just because you have a 144hz monitor doesnt mean you have to hit 144fps all the time. You can use vsync to keep things in check so you avoid tearing and because the monitor is refreshing much more often the kind of stuttering you can get is less noticeable.

Essentially the higher refresh rate just makes them better all the time.

If you really do want the best experience and your budget allows try and go for a 1440p 144hz monitor with gsync. It's essentially the perfect combination.

yup. Typically I get abou 75fps in my games for certain games. However in others I get 100fps. So a 75hz monitor may be ok (say lg 29" UW) however because of those 100fps games, that means the GPU is throttling back. I'd rather have a 144hz monitor, so always have the refresh headroom even if my GPU cannot fully do it all the time at least the monitor is higher hz than games, only thing would get 144fps is static menus.

Makes sense now. I just tried to understand if 1080 is capable of running it smooth, or will it be in the edge of issues and maybe a lower refresh rate is better to maintain good quality and performance.
Seen several people running 144Hz on lower graphics card and after you advice I will be on the search for the right monitor soon!) Thanks!
Although I am not sure I'll be able to stretch for G-Sync. But then again, i never planned getting 1080 either and here we are :D:D:D

Once again, thanks!
