I know there is currently a lot of threads about the Acer Predator XB271HU and other monitors in that range.

But im currently looking at the Acer Predator XB271HU abmiprz which is the TN version of that monitor.

It's around £480 where the IPS model is £600.

Wondering if the TN is still a good version to go with and if there are any downfalls over the IPS apart from viewing angles and the colours?

Or is the IPS definitely worth it over the TN?

From what I've researched today it's does the response time matter to you, can you even see it? if no and you have the cash go for IPS for the better colours most notable on blacks and whites. There is backlight bleed on IPS panels to consider, it seems very common but I've not looked into the severity on it

If you can see the blur and ghosting on IPS and it bothers you go for TN.

This video may help, it's the same monitor side by side but one is IPS and the other TN, however the TN panel is true 8-bit so it's colours are near identical to the IPS panel next to it except again for the whites and blacks and the slight difference in the other colours in the video to me seem to be because the TN panel is brighter.

I can see your monitor on the rainforest and for some reason the IPS is 396.54 + 25 delivered and the TN is 480.14 with Prime delivery. Rather strange for the IPS to be cheaper.

Thank you very much for the video really informative!

My main worry is with the backlight bleed, i had watched a video and out of 20 IPS monitors around 70% had what they thought was unacceptable backlight bleed and i hear it is kind of a lottery which really puts me off.

Granted the video was on Asus who at the moment have really bad quality control i hear Acer and AOC are supposed to be better.

Im going to do a bit more research as i think if the TN panel is true 8 Bit then i might go for it.

I can't see it on the rainforest at that price, it's 599 Prime delivery for me?

Im wondering if any stores have any where i could use them for a bit, we have no specialist PC hardware stores here which is a bit annoying.

Thanks again for the help!

I have the ips and got it for £500, wait for black Friday it's one of those monitors that drop regularly to £500 or just below.

Warning though buying IPS panels seems like pot luck so buy from somewhere with free returns as you way have to return for a replacement if you get a bad panel

That seems like a good idea, im reading more into it now and it seems the IPS vs TN the Input Lag + Response Time overall isn't too far from each other.

I do play a lot of fast paced games like Rocket League, COD and others but im really wondering if i will even see the difference seeing as this will probably be my monitor upgrade for the next 3/5 years i might just go all out with the IPS.

I'll be buying it from here or the rainforest i can imagine depending on deals

4ms doesn't sound like a lot on paper, but consider that humans blink at 3 to 4ms and think of the adage "in the blink of an eye" or all those times you think "if I was half a second faster!!"

Did you also not notice the blur in the video during Fallout 4 in Diamond City?

I can see a difference in some colours between both screens from my TN panel. Some people say looking at it through a TN screen is not representative so watch through the IPS screen of your phone. I did that and got the same difference to my TN panel.

It's also worth noting in the video that the 8 bit TN panel scores higher for sRGB colour accuracy, it's at 1:57. So that particular 8 bit TN panel is supposed to have better colours then the IPS it's next too. So that sounds like you are paying £150 more for worse colours.

Have now watched it on my phone and i can see a slight blur effect on the IPS.

I could see the colour difference on my TN panel when i watched it last night.

Do you think the Acer TN panel would be up with the ASUS version in the video?

If i knew that i'd probably just go for TN, hardest decision i've ever made in all my PC building years.

I know, it's so much money for a monitor. You can get a Sony Bravia 50" UHD HDR Smart TV for £500 and here we are with 27" IPS monitors over £600.

As for your question on the TN Predator I don't know. I can't find it listed on Acer's website; only the IPS version, and where I can find the TN panel it only says 16.7m colours so I would expect they are 6 bit panels with FRC and those are the panels people think of when they say IPS is far better than TN. The Asus and Dell TN panels both specifically state they are 8 bit panels, I think the Dell even says real 8 bit.

I'm looking to buy a monitor too maybe you've seen my thread. If I'm going for a TN screen it's either the Asus PG278QR or Dell S271DG.

Yeah it's really gone insane for the 144hz the price just rockets!

Well i've had a look at the dell and thats looking like a top pick for me, use a lot of them in work and they are great monitors (obv not 144hz) but build quality is very good and their warranty is extremely good with whatever we have sent back.

I never thought to go down the dell route!

I assume your saying the S2716DG is true 8 bit? I cant find it on the tech specs on dell. Any chance you could link?

Okay i was looking on the dell website it doesn't show it on there! So was a bit confused.

Was just down in pc earth and they have 30 odd pcs set up with all the gear for christmas (not one pc was set up to the 144hz lol) was able to play on the 24" predator TN and then the 27" IPS. The colour difference is pretty noticable but im putting that down to not being real 8 bit!

Ive never used anything above 60hz and it just blew me away! The IPS has such great colours but if the real 8 bit sorts that out i will definitely go with the TN.

Only thing is i never got to play games on the IPS because some kid had logged the fortnite account out and thats the only game they had.

I would still expect there to be some difference in colour even on an 8 bit panel due to backlight on IPS panels being so bright.

Is there a freesync version?

Yeah i wouldn't mind a bit of difference but i think the 24" TN i was looking at was a lower series 6 bit version of the predator so i was expecting a large difference on that compared to the IPS.

Thing is i have another 27" TN and a 22" TN that will be above and to the left of the new monitor depending how the 1080p resolution works with the 1440P so i might just go TN and deal with the colours.

If i get the dell i'll let you know how it goes on here.

Is there a freesync version?

Unfortunately dell haven't made one yet that i know off, but there is some other great freesync ones out there plus the price point will be lower because G-Sync seems to raise the price because it's nVidia....

Decided to go to my PC earth too so I can relate and compare with you more, but what a waste of time it was. No gaming monitors, no high refresh rate monitors, no GSYNC or Freesync on display and none of them interactive. Just standard monitors and some curved ones. I saw an IPS panel next to a TN panel and the IPS looked dog**** but another IPS panel made both look like dog**** and that great IPS panel compared to another TN panel further down the shelf looked the same and I'm betting the TN wasn't 8 bit.

Rather hard to conclude anything. I have another PC shop near me in Port Solent which I'm thinking of visiting to see what they have on display in their showroom. Never mind I've just been on their live chat and they have no GSYNC's on display either.

Yeah the IPS looks great but i know myself the blur will annoy me so i've decided that im going with the dell S2716DG you mentioned after a lot of hard thinking, it's currently £440 on the rainforest.

Basically if it has Real 8-Bit colours how much worse can it be than my current TN which doesn't annoy me in the slightest, so im going for the guaranteed quicker overall response time and the hassle of possibly returning monitors the get a good IPS with no BLB which i know will also really annoy me if i pay £600 for the monitor!

Hopefully you get sorted out but i can always send it back if it's terrible.

For some reason my PC Earth had a massive event for Fallout 76 never seen anything like it before, bit of a let down you can't go and play with some so you can make an easier choice.
