After reading many 2080 reviews I've come to thought I don't need one for 1440p gaming with all settings maxed and get 80fps+

In the benchmarks a 1080 is hitting this target and more. I have a gsync monitor which will help too, on that basis I'm thinking of selling my 970 and getting a 1080.

What are your thoughts?

I run a 1080 ti overclocked to 2Ghz\12Ghz and an 8700k overclocked to 5Ghz ON 1440P/165hz G-Sync monitor and don't think it's overkill. But then I like to run AAA games fully maxed out. If you are happy to turn the settings down to high you'll have no problems with a 1080 non-ti.

What FPS do you aim for in game? Are you getting over 80 with all settings maxed?

You'll save a boat load of cash by going for the 1080. You might even get one on a deal - saw one for £399 the other day. Near enough half the price of the 2080 equivalent!

I have a 1080 with 1440p/144hz/gsync and it works great at that resolution. However you wont be able to max everything at 144 fps.

To be honest maxed settings are not always necessary, a lot of the settings can be turned down without any appreciable difference in quality.

I agree with Kieran. I have used 1070, 1070Ti, RX Vega 56 and 1080 Ti on a 1440p 144 Hz monitor.

You could get away with a 1070 but I would go 1070 Ti and overclock if cheaper than a 1080 otherwise a 1080 would be great.

Good to know but my target is just 80 FPS :) hoping OCUK have a deal on soon as I don't fancy buying from another retailer

Should be fine, though there are always outliers and some games that are just pigs. :p

Worth keeping an eye on the MM, could pick one up for 300 quid.

I have had a 100Hz 1440p monitor for 5 years and a 1080 since launch. Even 2 years after release the performance is still phwoar.

Obviously some games cannot be maxed out and still maintain a good FPS but in those games I just tinker with the settings to get good framerate and they still look great. The exception is poorly optimised and/or early access games but they are often not worth playing anyway.

Cool thanks, like the look of it and will fit easily in my NZXT case. I read a review that said you can't overclock the RAM on it though?

Best choice for 1440p is the 1080Ti. The luxury choice is the 2080Ti. (Unless it's only a 60Hz panel). 1070s and 1080s are Ok though for <80fps gaming.
