1440p gaming upgrade

Hi all,

After initially looking to replace my HD6950 with something modest due to noise generation, my aspirations have grown arms and legs and I'm now looking at an upgrade to a 1440p setup.

I'm not fussed in terms of Red or Green and will obviously wait for the R9 290X and (hopefully) associated nVidia pricedrop. I just wondered if anyone can comment on their setups & performance?

Rest of the system is:

i2500k (@4.5)
8GB Corsair Dual Vengeance
Corsair 650W HX (somewhat of a concern!)

I could xfire a couple of R9 280s for current GTX 780 money but would obviously have to bin the PSU.

Any ideas?

SLI 670s @ 1440p - Over 60FPS easily on all games. BF4 BETA was a stuttering mess at times though, hopefully this will be fixed.

I found 1x 670 was enough for most games, but not all.

My next step looks likely to be Maxwell now - 290x perhaps wont offer enough power. I'd be looking at 3gb+ vRAM and certainly I would prefer to have one card (much cheaper for watercooling haha!)

im using a 1400p monitor with 7970 crossfire which is on par with 280x and its pretty good, I would also consider 7950 crossfire as I don't think this can be beat for bang for buck

Though we dont know the performance of the R9-290 or the 290x, i would be willing to bet that they will handle 1440p without much issue in most cases (though you may have to turn down the eye candy slightly for some intensive games)

Xfire 7970s is a good shout too but buying a new PSU + monitor +two cards may put you off it. The cost becomes quite high and some people have stuttering issues with crossfire

Same as this fella regarding fps on a 7950 crossfire setup. Minus the stuttering in BF4 though. :)
