Hi All,

I'm in the process or choosing the components for a system upgrade after 4 years!

After feedback, i've settled on a AMD Ryzen 3700X, X570 MB, 970EVO Plus NVME SSD and 3600mhz CL-16 Ram (still undecided on 32gb or 16gb).

Currently my existing gpu is a Asus strix gtx 980 oc 4gb.

Should i upgrade my graphics card to a RTX 2060 Super or can my card hold out for another year?

I game on a 1440p monitor - normally rts or fps games, to date not much online play.

Many thanks

980 4gb should be ok on most games but 1440p im not sure. Id check ur spec and card against ur most played games or games ur interested in and see how they stack up at 1440p if possible. If you dont mind turning a few settings down i bet u probs could play em at 1440p tho. Tho if u were to sell ur card for funds towards a new card id do it sooner rather than later as the value will surely go down quick when some new cards for mid market come out from amd and from nvidia later on.

At 1440P my 980Ti struggled with a lot of newer games, you would get noticeable hitching in certain scenes. I eventually upgraded to a 2080 which made a huge difference, I was able to keep the settings maxed out and have games run mostly smooth (I was on a 3770K at the time).

for my money I would be looking at the 2070 Super if you can stretch to it.

my old setup is a msi z87-g45 mb, i5-4670k cpu (stock cooler) and 16gb ram with 650w psu.

I've been having some issues with the usb ports and blue screens (randomly about once a week).

the inside of the case is dusty, cable management is all over the place.

Just feel like its a good time to upgrade the cpu, mb and get a nvme ssd - then have a nice clean case with rgb lighting.

I think a rtx 2060 super would do me well, but i hear big improvements are coming next year in gpus - hence the hesitation.

5700XT

Don't waste your money on the 2060 Super. For that money you can get a 5700 XT which is far superior. Or if you're prepared to spend the money on a top-end 5700 XT like the Nitro+, there's an argument to get the low-end 2070 Super from KFA2.

A 2060S would be a noticable upgrade, but the 5700 XT is the same price and much the same performance (sometimes matching the 2070S) so if you have a Freesync monitor may be the preferred choice.

The next generation is almost always better. We're still on the steep part of the S curve.

Drop the 3700X to 3600 or 3600X - Saved you £100+
Drop NVME SSD to Sata SSD - Saved more money
Buy Crucial Ballistix LT Sport for £70 - 16gb 3200mhz - saved you £100

then buy either a 5700(xt) or a 2070 super.

I used to run a single 980ti at 1440p and is maxed every game with ease tbh. Then moved to 980ti SLI which made a little difference on most games. Now changed again to below. But for 1440p a 980ti is plenty or a 1070 would be a better option if Nvidia.

I run a 6-7 year old Sandybridge I7 with a newer EVGA 1070 (8gb) and I can run pretty much any game full whack decent FPS.

I get the occasional low frames cuased by complex GPU calculations if there a lot of physics going on or similar, but mostly fine, and will only be a very short split second or 2.

Maybe just not buy a while new system and get a new GPU? Or put up with what you have, surely cant be that bad?

It`s got to the point where it is not worth splashing out on top end cards with the newbies coming out next year unless you can pick up one on a very good deal like the up and coming black friday deals.

Depends on what settings and fps you are aiming for. I've recent changed to a 1440p monitor and find my 1070 is right at the limit with most of the games i want to play at the fps i want (100-120fps)

I was looking at a 2070S but ended up putting it off until the 3 series mainly due to the die shrink and potentially better ray tracing capabilities.

to all the people saying a 1070 or 980ti is good enough for 1440p. please explain how? i get like 90 fps on Apex Legends which is well optimised. My monitor is 165 hz and my GPU is a 1080.

For 1440P you need 1080ti, 2070s or 5700XT or at a push a 2060 Super minimum these days.

I've made do with a 970 at 1440p for an awful long time. Details turned down, obviously, but it wasn't a horrendous experience by any means.

Now using my laptop's 2070 Max-Q to drive it and that doesn't quite max out the 144Hz, but it's doing a perfectly fine job of it until I can justify buying a new GPU for the desktop...

Apex is well optimised. If I turn everything down I go from 90 fps to maybe 110 fps max. It isn't worth an extra 20 fps here and there to lose all the details. 1440p is a high res. 1080p gaming then i would agree but 1440p needs a lot of power. especially with modern high refresh rate monitors.
