If I don't feel so rich, can I go for ultrawide 1080p ? Or not worth it? I am on 16:9 1080p atm, and wanted to go to 16:9 1440p but I might reconsider after reading this....

I went from a 27" 1080p screen to a 34" 2560x1080 screen and although theyre the same height the res didn't do it justice I suppose because I've been upping the res on my 1080p monitor via DSR for so long, In the end I sent the 2560x1080 back and now I'm on 3440x1440 which looks a lot better.

Also note that AMD do not support DSR for ultrawide, I don't know if Nvidia's VSR does or not.

I also think that if your buying a new monitor for gaming an adaptive sync models a must.

Something worth noting:

A 34" 21:9 has the same screen height as a 27" 16:9 has.

I think you'll find that a 29" 21:9 has around the same screen height as a 24" 16:9 but you'd need to double check that and depending on what your moving from decide if it's what you want.

I know the 34" matches a 27" as I had both side by side.

Currently have a 22" so either way it will be slightly taller.

I just like the idea of the games being moe immersive on an ultrawide.

I went from a 22'' Dell Ultrasharp to the 1080p 29'' LG 29UM68-P.
I would not switch back to 16:9 now. Amazing to have that extra width and the addition of Freesync on the monitor makes a huge difference to me. Good monitor aside from the awful stand... easyrider after seeing your cantilever bracket i bought the same one, huge difference.

Just what I wanted to hear! Also I notice you have the nitro 480, handles the games ok with the extra width on pixels?

Wow thats a lot of time to put into that game :) i agree it was a great game but i thought my 150 hours i put into it was a lot. I think i spoiled it for myself using all them keys to get all the best guns, i should have just farmed them and i would enjoyed doing it.

To be fair a lot of that time was spent farming legendaries or trying to beat raid bosses solo :D

I game at 4K, and have to admit I feel like I've missed out on something with 21:9 gaming.

I'd switch in your shoes. The aspect ratio makes far more difference than the resolution

I wouldn't got 34" superwide 1080p

I also wouldn't go 29" superwide 1080p

The former would mean a loose pixel pinch and the latter like gaming on a wide 24" monitor.

34" 1440p is where its at...

Save up :)

This. Dont go any lower than that res for 34".

23" is the max you should go for 1080p

27" for 1440p

34" for 3440x1440

40" for 4k

1080p @ 34" will be blurry and pixelated and for me,1080p was too low for 27". Sharpness goes out the window

Just to clear the 1080P for 24/27" part up, yes 23/24" 1920x1080 is the max you should go for a satisfactory PPI but 29" 21.9 is 2560x1080, not 1920x1080 so the PPI is actually slightly higher than 1920x1080 23/24"

Here are some PPI calculations to give people an idea

16.9 screens

  • 24" 1920x1080 = 91
  • 27" 2560x1440 = 108
  • 32" 3840x2160 = 137
  • 40" 3840x2160 = 110
21.9 screens

  • 25" 2560x1080 = 111
  • 29" 2560x1080 = 95
  • 34" 2560x1080 = 81
  • 34" 3440x1440 = 109
  • 35" 2560x1080 = 79

Viewing distance should also be taken into account, the further you sit back from a screen, the sharper/clearer said screen will look since you can't see/notice the pixels as easily. Personally I find with these 21.9 screens, even 29", you want to sit further back to really appreciate the extra FOV/wideness.

went from a 27" 1920 x 1200 screen 16:10 (don't like 16:9 - I do work on my PC as well as games)
to a

34" 3440 x 1440 100Hz, I do like the new screen ...............

But , the amount of pixels you have to push onto the screen as a LOT more
so be prepared for a Fps drop

I love arma3 and DCS on my 21:9 its great , older games .. well you got bars sadly

The 21:9 is also not as tall as my old 27" 16:10

My ideal screen would have been a 30" or 34" 16:10 @ 2560 x 1600 with gsync but sadly no such screen exists

For gaming it's not bad, you don't really notice it.

Everyones different Nasher, but for me personally it was to blurry. I admit I'm a graphics snob and being from an art background, part of what I love about games are the graphics and the fidelity a nice sharp picture brings. I just found 1080p @ 27" on a monitor where you sit so close was far too noticeable.

On a 46" TV sat on the couch its cool but 23" was all I could stomach for a monitor. My X34 @3440x1440 is definitely the lowest resolution I would go for the size as well

Gsync helps A LOT with 3440x1440 I found and really helps out with the drop in framerates. Having a 1080 does ease the problems as well though

I went from the Swift to a X34 and have no regrets at all.

144hz vs 100hz - little difference to my eyes
TN vs IPS - IPS is much better
Yeah FPS will be lower but that's what G-Sync is there for.

They are and being used to a 22" means as you said a 29" will be a step up in every way, Plus 2560x1080 will be more than enough pixels to look great and not be too demanding.
