144Hz, 240Hz and FPS Question?

Hi Guys,

Sorry if this has been asked before, I've done some googling and can't seem to find a definite answer.

If I'm only managing 140fps, is a 240Hz Display overkill and waste of money or are there still benefits?

Is there a direct correlation between FPS and Hz?

Thanks in advanced for helping me get my head around this.
 
Hz = how many times the monitor refreshes per second
fps = how many frames your pc can output per second

but if the monitor has variable refresh rate, then the Hz adjusts to be equal to the fps, so if both monitors had gsync then your experience would be identical.
 
Thanks Billy, so if I've understood correctly; If my GPU is outputting 140fps and I've got a 240Hz Monitor with Freesync, it will automatically adjust the Hz to 140Hz matching my fps?

Therefore I'm better off with a 144Hz Display than a 240Hz Display?
 
For gaming if you can't output the FPS then it's a waste having a 240hz display. You'll get benefits non gaming in that it'll be giving you 240Hz on the desktop.

Important to know the difference between 60hz and 144hz is easy to see. The difference from 144hz to 240hz will be limited to none.

I was basing my decision on Fortnite but, after installing Counter Strike GO I’m getting just over 200fps so will go for 240Hz

My main display is a Dell 27” 1440p IPS with 100% sRGB and Adobe... just limited to 60Hz
 
The difference from 144 to 240 is perceptibly lower than 60 to 144, but it is real and far from none.

As Linus pointed out in one of their videos, they didn't notice the difference at 240 hz, but their gameplay improved noticably when moving from 144hz to 240hz. The change was repeatable by changing resolutions and getting the same results. While they couldn't see the difference they benefited from it.

A lot of people can't tell the difference. A lot of people can. But everyone will benefit from the increase whether they can see it or not. Blurbusters also has plenty of info on it.

Having been using a 240hz display for more than a year now and i can tell when the refresh rate drops below 240. In the beginning I couldn't even tell the difference between 60 and 240 and thought I had wasted my money. I wouldnt want to go back or down to 144 now.

I’ve narrowed it down to two... which one would you go for, or does it not really matter at this price point?

Only 240hz has almost no blur. 144hz will have blur for me 144hz if it was ok i would buy into it. But its not good enough only at 240hz does magic happen.

Do not buy a 144hz monitor either buy a good 240hz like the AW2518 OR wait for 0.5ms 240hz which i have been doing for over six months.

Not sure if you've read my previous posts but, I've said I'm going with 240Hz and the two monitors I've listed are both 240Hz.
