Hi,

I purchased an 14900k from ocuk yesterday as I wanted to upgrade from my 12700k but I have come in to a problem, my pc wont boot now. I updated my bios on my Asus Z690-A Gaming D4 to the latest and installed the 14900k but the only thing what happens is the RGB lights up and thats it, no Qcode or anything when I press the power button. The best thing is putting my 12700k back in and still no boot, just RGB :(

I've tried the following so far to fix the problem:

Reinstalled the 12700k
Tried 1 stick of memory
Reseated the cpu using 12700k and 14900k
Reset CMOS / Removed battery
Bios Flashback to my last bios what i knew worked in my system

I'm at a loss now on what to do

The below picture is all what happens when power is connected

Thanks

David

Thanks so much for the advice, I’ve currently got its cmos battery removed and power cable. Going to leave it removed over night and see if it works in the morning.

It’s like the computer is in standby mode. All the lights are on except nothing happens when you press the power button. Leaving the cmos battery out overnight didn’t do anything . I’m going to strip it again and rebuild it on a motherboard box with very little components and see if that sorts it. I have a feeling it’s a motherboard rma situation tho

How frustrating for you, perhaps more so as you had a fully working system and merely swapped over the CPU. IIRC @Rroff had to use a beta BIOS for full support of his 14700k, even tho the previous non beta BIOS was supposed to support his 14700k.
Then again I see you have issues even going back to your AL CPU.
Hopefully you will get it to boot when you test it again later, removing the GPU etc.

Did you check the CPU socket for bent pins, as suggested previously...?

Good luck.
Hi

Yes I did check the pins. I think the look ok

Bios 2602 was the first release bios to support 14th gen BUT on asus's website it recommends before updating the bios to download and install the ME firmware to version 16.1.27.2176 to insure optimal system settings.

If you have installed 2802 that has the same recommendation but ME firmare to install before updating the bios is 16.1.30.2264.

Problem is the latest ME firmare to support 2802 isnt on the site yet, the latest ME firmare is 16.1.27.2176 which would work with bios version 2602, if you scroll down the page near the bottom is where the firmare links are.

I would install the 12700k and roll back to 2004, if the pc works, great download ME firmare 16.1.27.2176 install that then update the bios to 2602.
Many thanks for that information, I’ll give it a go now. Fingers crossed.

I’ve tried rolling back to 2004 but still nothing. No boot led just rgb on io shield and keyboard and mouse. I’ve removed everything apart from my windows m2 and 1 stick of ram even tried a different psu.

ME firmware has to be installed before the bios update, and you can't roll back the ME. Not the best scenario.

But I think the fact that the fans aren't spinning points to something different.
More likely a short of some sort that is preventing the system from starting.

Unplug everything from the MB except the CPU PSU and one stick of ram, if you have an old air CPU cooler install it
I’ve tried with everything removed on a box with just the 24pin and 8 pin connected. No cpu or ram installed and still nothing happens so I’m putting it down to the board bricking itself.

Have you tried doing the bios flashback several times?
Yup tried about 8 times.
Is the MB reacting properly, light flashing and then going out?
Are you doing the flashback with no other components connected to the MB?
Yup flashes 3 times then flashes for a good 4-6 mins.

What PSU are you using?
I’m using a Corsair 850x but have tried with a rog 1000w as well.

Everything lights up except ram and error leds. Io, keyboard, mouse all light up.

Well the board worked after I flashed it, as I ran some cinebench before I removed the old cpu so I could compare as you do. Unplugged everything cable wise and installed the new cpu as I’ve done many times before. Went to boot up after installing and nothing happened.

I looked at your pic and had a looked at user manual, it appeared in the pic you plugged 2 ATX power connectors to A: ATX_12V_1 and C: ATX_12V_PWR so it seemed you forget to plugged in 3rd power connector to B: ATX_12V_2. You will need to plug in three power connectors to ports marked A, B and C accorded to manual motherboard diagram.
The extra 8 pin isn’t needed, only when overclocking.

Damn, that it seems you now have to deal with a dead system and you have 14900k that still can't be tested. Guessing that also has a limited easy window of returns. What will you do about the 14900k...?

I think the only option is to rma the motherboard and see what they say. I did purchase it in 2021 tho, hopefully they can sort something out (not OCUK). I’ve got a z790 coming tomorrow so I can at least test the cpus and go from there, will try the 12700k first.

Nothing on the bottom of the cpu and I’m using NT-H2 paste. I’ve read a few threads on Reddit and apparently there is some later bios from Asus which are bricking boards. Hopefully the new board works. I’ve sent the old motherboard off for rma this afternoon so it will be interesting to see what they find, I’ve also rma the chip just to rule that out as well. I’ve got a z790 board coming which I’m going to use with my 12700k in the mean time, that way I don’t have to update the bios and risk it again with the 14900k.

Thanks all for your help and suggestions and I’ll definitely update this thread once I’ve got the results of the RMA’s.

Right little update.....

I got hold of a z790 and tried it with my 12700k and everything is working great. I've repurchased an 14900k from OCUK which I'm hoping will work this time. My old z690 is still in rma which ill sell the replacement once its all sorted out. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
