Not sure about this but I played it safe.

My partner went to a local butcher yesterday. We had pork and beef ribs for some friends round yesterday which went down great.

She also bought a joint of beef. To be honest I didn't like the look of it and it was not from a butcher I have used before. It smelt a bit strong so I washed and hung it in my fridge.

Today I cooked it believing it to be top side but now think it was Brisket with some basting fat on it. Upon carving it was clear not all was right. It had a blackish/purple is centre and was as tough as gristle.

Trying the end part it tasted bitter and I am sure it is well off. Phoned the butcher who opens today and he put the phone down on me when I suggested it maybe off.

I am letting it cool then freezing it, maybe I will give it to a food agency.

Really not happy as I have ruined Sunday lunch

You sure you didn't get a cured brisket joint? Purplish colour, strong smell and very tough all sound as though it could possibly have been cured.

Plus, if it was brisket, even uncured, and you tried to roast it like you would do topside then it would be very tough regardless.

I don't get why you washed it and hung it in your fridge? Pics and a better explination would be good, I don't think the FSA will be too interested but if you feel that upset over it have a word with the butcher yourself he might explain the situation better.

I'd take it to the butcher and go speak to him tbh, he might be able to identify what was wrong with it tbh. Pics?

sounds like it was a joint of Brisket cooked like it was topside, in which case it was under cooked by several hours, thats whats wrong with it :/

It definitely sounds like that but without pictures and a better description it's hard to make an accurate guess. OP needs to update with more info :)
