Previously I was looking for a low-end laptop but with a great screen..... I failed to find one. As a result I've changed my plans and now am aiming for a machine that can also be used for gaming etc, with extra budget coming from my PC upgrade plan.

So.... the laptop will be used for moderate gaming (I still have a desktop for serious gaming but sometimes its nice to just take the laptop round to a mates house) as well as watching movies in bed etc. Viewing angles need to be good for the movies hence I'd like an IPS display (PLS is fine too of course). My dream size is 15 inch as 17 inch ones are a bit too big (If I wanted a non-portable computer I'd just use my desktop) while smaller ones I find the lack of screen space annoying. I prefer matt to glossy screens. Anyone got any suggestions? :D not worried about budget at this time.

I'm struggling to find suitable candidates - the HP Spectre XT seems to have a nice screen and is the right size, but I presume intel HD gfx 4000 is useless? I can let the glossy screen go, but if it won't run games I'm not interested in spending all that much on it. I'm really not sure just how weak it is though - I'm not bothered by the thought of dropping settings a bit. Any other options?

If any gaming is involved I wouldn't bother with the HD 4000 gfx!

I'd say something like a 660M may be adequate to your needs. Having said that, it's obviously budget dependent!

There is a nice 17"-er on DELL outlet Inspiron 7720:

Inspiron 17R - 7720

32GB mSATA3 SSD for Minicard Slots
750 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
750 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)

Spec really descent with loads (maybe not even required) HDD space and a graphic card which will cope with moderate games easily....and for roughly 650 is a good price I think.

Or you can still go 15" way:

LCD Back Cover : Aluminium

Moderate gaming should be ok on 15" but probably not with all the bells and whistles :)
But for 520 pounds might be ideal for you :)

Both have 1080p screens which is a plus and aluminium case which again is a plus. All depends what is the budget and if that's all right with you to have a Dell refurbished.

You can go to notebookcheck and wizz through some tests they have
