My friend's looking for a 15" (no more than 15.6") laptop to replace his busted M17x. Preferably with a gpu at least as good as a GTX260, but better than a 260 if at 1080p.

No requirement for i7's etc. the most system intensive task will definitely be gaming, no video rendering etc. that will require massive cpu power or more than 4Gb RAM.

Any suggestions?

He glanced at the Acer 3d laptop (G51?), but the 3d adds too much to the pricetag without any real use (GTX260 at half performance: :o) And he doesn't want to buy the M15x to replace it as the Alienware is really thick and heavy, and he did not appreciate the rainbow lights or 16:10 ratio on the M17x.

hp have got an new laptop coming out called envy thats pretty high spec it is a 14" not 15" but comes with a ati 5850 i think ?

Pedster the E series has a 5145, I didn't even know that existed as a card, and it's definitely nowhere near a GTX260

Wattsy the Envy 15 can have up to a 5830, but he has an aversion to HP products so will keep looking for now.

Mesh have a nice laptop in at the moment - rebadged MSI GX740 with 4gbRAM, 5870, 500gb HD, i5 for £999 including VAT - By far the best gaming spec for a grand that I've found. Unfortunately, Mesh suck as a company. (Doh, it's a 17" laptop too).

Another one to consider is the G860 from Kobalt, though the cheapest spec is around £1,200.

Hells, I have experience with Mesh.... And am in the process of being refunded for a desktop which broke 5 times, once after they sent it back to us after saying they'd replaced the GPU which was supposedly the problem... So nothing doing there...

My friend is being refunded for a Kobalt order with a 5870 in at the moment, they totally failed to notify anyone they were moving offices, no notice on their site, no emails, nothing until you called to check up on the order which was meant to have arrived already.

So yeah, while those would be the original best options, the two companies let them down :D

wow, the £999 mesh laptop looks like a pretty good spec but I just paid £690 for a dell with same spec just with a lesser 5650gfx and a better i5 520m tho. seems quite a price hike for just a better gfx card

edit: wait i suppose you do get 2 years warranty ans free tv tuner but still quite a lot of money

^^ The 5870 desktop card is worth about £250 more than the 5650, in a desktop the price normally works out being much cheaper than the laptop component so I'd add closer to £300, £350 for a 5870 over a 5650, and maybe more given extra power requirements, cooling etc. required to run a 5870M.

That sort of spec on the Mesh/MSI laptop is nearly as good as what you'd be looking at on a desktop at that price range with monitor keyboard etc., albeit with a 5870M instead of full blown 5870, so its price is really good for a laptop. Mesh have crap customer care however, and haven't got a clue how to fix their own computers, tech support just babble on and say try starting it in safe mode over and over in barely intelligible accents over the phone.

tbh your probably right and im just trying to make myself feel better as was only able to afford a 5650 laptop. if i had the money i would have snapped that up right away.

damn, thought id grown out of tech envy...

OMG THAT MESH LAPTOP!! I which they also did the 15" GX640 as well with the HD5850 cos thats the one I'm after

Is there anywhere selling the mesh laptop online? I know we can't mention competitors i just want to know if it's being sold online. The mesh website has a list of sellers for different categories (including ocuk) but i can't find the laptop on any of them

EDIT: Found it!
