Please help:
want to replace my abit nf7 v2 and xp2400 with something that will be noticeably quicker!

will be using 1gb geil value from above system
generally use system for final scratch (dj system), photoshop and internet - not really gaming

want a good overclocker

Any suggestions

If you wanted to play games I'd suggest the OEM 64 4000+s as they are overclocking really well and would be a cheap system to put together but you don't so... perhaps a dual core X2 3800+ or you could prolly fit an E6300 in if you stretched the budget on the mobo to the 775Dual-VSTA. Doubt it'll overclock too well but haven't looked into it...

you're best off saving up for a Core Duo upgrade, unless its REALY urgent in wich case go for a cheap AMD system as you can use your ram in it (not AM2)

Would have to change/get DDR2 RAM with that.

But your second (X2) suggestion is good, e.g...
  • Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 (Socket 939 & Upgradable to AM2) AGP & PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-002-AK) £37.99
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA3800BVBOX) (CP-134-AM) £91.99
  • Subtotal £129.98
  • VAT £22.75
  • Total £152.73
I'm sure you have a AGP graphics card? With above you get to keep/use that ;)

asus a8n-e or dfi board and a amd athlon 4000+ and overclock it to 3ghz would be thje best option for games atm.

much as i would like to upgrade now i think waiting for the coreduos to come down a little bit is the best option and to sell my ram too, although i am tempted by the other suggestions!...decisions

conroe is NOT going to drop in price until next year. well they might drop by 5 pounds or so lol. so unless u want to wait until next year just go amd x2

How about an Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 (Socket 939 & Upgradable to AM2) AGP & PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-002-AK) together with a retail X2 3800.

You can use existing memory and graphics plus have the pci-e slot there for your next graphics purchase.

Go for the mobo and graphics first, the cpu you can get in a bit on MM if you want.

okay this is what i'm thinking having read your comments and thought about money (booo)

E6300 CPU- £124
ASROCK ConRoe 945G-DVI MB - £54 (can get a decent graphics card at a later date!)
1GB GEIL VALUE PC5300 RAM - £70

TOTAL - £248 inc VAT - nearly 100 more but i think i can stretch and believe the benefits will be justified esp. as i can get a decent cooler e.g a Ninja at a later date when i feel the need for some overclocking (probably straight away!!). Just sold my xp2400 for £40 so if i can get a £100 for the MB and RAM then a shade under a ton for an X2 4400 killer is pretty good value imo!

Any thoughts?

sounds good if you can live without the killer graphics.
