150 quid upgrade for a mate

Hello,
Someone i know has 150 to upgrade his cpu&mobo for, hes on a 1.8 ghz socket 754 cpu with 1 gig of ram.

I recommended him to get an asrock dual-vsta plus an intel core 2 duo e4300 or e6300, he wants to go (taken from another forum):
What about this?


1GB Stick of RAM

940 Skt Motherboard

and

AMD 3500+ 2.2GHz Processor

that tallys upto £152

(dont forget i already have 1279mb RAM taking up 3 slots... this M/B has 4 slots)

Now he isnt sure about what is faster, obviously i said the core 2 duo runs over a puny single core 3500 a64...
But i need a few reply's to back me up :p .

EDIT: he said he thought amd is for gaming...

this would probably give you a better basis for a machine

it may not be the latest gen but it certainly will last a little longer than a skt 940 mobo.

plus your mate could add in a core2duo at a later point.

Use his old Ram - it is DDR? Cool.

£150 for a cheap screamer.

AMD used to have the edge. On his budget we can squeak in the current champion family.
 
As above, plus if hes got 3 sticks already, 2x512 and a 256 by the sounds of it, he cant just shove another 1gb stick in it.

And if he goes for am2 he will need new ram anyway.
