£150 upgrade - 6850 or 460 1gb

I have a 9800gtx and looking for something that will handle 1920x1080 better, these two are around the same price, which is better? preferably would like to add a little AA, since atm i can run most games near highest settings but no AA.

thanks

actually there is a 470 for 264, only think thats put me off is apparantly its very loud, plus i have a smallish case (cm 690) and only a corsair 520w psu (although this is very stable)

title wrong ment to say 460.

You mean 460, well the Gigabyte 460 OC 1GB is a cracking card, amazing cooler that is super quiet and overclocks for fun. You can also get a 470 for £165 which is faster than the 460 but will run hotter and be noisy when compared to the 460, your PSU will be good for both cards. Personally I would go 460 and clock it to 800Mhz core for nigh on 470 performance.

6850 is a good card as well but the 460 has a better cooler and more features like physx, 3D vision and cuda which may or may not interest you.

Can I ask a silly question - does your motherboard support SLI or Crossfire and would you be looking later to add a second card as a cheap upgrade path?

no im still on a 775 p35 board atm so no not for now.

Is that crossfire or sli?

I only ask because if you have a crossfire board and buy an nvidia card you wont have the option of adding a second card to sli at later date and would be forced to buy a faster card - same goes for an sli based board of you buy an ati card - it's worth bearing in mind because its always cheaper to add a second card to sli or crossfire than it is to buy a single new gen card that can outpace a pair of oldies.

I ran a pair of 4870's crossfired on this board (an Asus p5q deluxe) and the second card only ran at 8x but didn't benchmark any differently to boards that did both at 16x so I'm not sure I'd worry too much about that.

I thought it was worth mentioning though as it's easy to recommend a single card but worth considering the upgrade path depending on which motherboard you have.

think the second one only runs in x4, its a gigabyte ds3p.

After looking at both 460 1gb and the 470 i think the 460 is better value and i can overclock it like hell and not have to worry about heat/noise/power like with the 470.

What CPU you using by the way? Only asking because of having seen quite a lot of people pair a fast graphic card with a slow CPU and upset about not getting the performance boost they were expecting...

not the best, but a C2D @ which ive just managed to get up to 3ghz, sure its not quad core, but tbh a 3ghz e6400 is still plenty for games in my opinion.

This will be my next upgrade too.

Just bought one of them msi 460gtx hawks, i was told my 520w corsair psu will have 2 pci-e connectors this is true right?

Should be easy enough to install?

Also bought one of them earlier today and spookily enough I have a 520w Corsair as well. Yeah it has 2x leads supplied with the PSU. Now to actually find it...
