Got some wedge coming thru in next 2-3 weeks so am passing this pc onto my son and buying a brand new rig for gaming :)

have 1500 ish as a budget, want all round speed please,

would prefer a nice uv setup with side panel on case and decent psu

dont need loads of hdd space so maybe a raptor for speed, deffo 2gb ram and a nice monitor aswell, current is 19" tft so same would be preferred, also wanna ditch my 5.1 creative inspire for 2.1 as I am sick of 5 speakers and the associated cables cluttering

mouse and keyboard aswell, i am a lefty so bare in mind

possibility of overclocking maybe but not really a must, more bang for buck

oh yeah, or should i save pennies a bit and wait for conroe :P

p4 3.4 (s478), x800xt (agp),
1024mb ram,
250gb sata,
LG dvdr/w (8x)
matx gigabyte board,
ob sound (use spdif for creative insire 5500 digital speakers)
19" Fujitsu siemens tft (20ms i believe but no ghosting etc in any games)

the system is actually a fujitsu siemens Scaleo but I upgraded the gfx from a 9600xt (I work for fujitsu and we got a good deal which Mr Brown has now taken away grrrrrrrr)

the main purpose is to pass this to my middle son, have 3 kids, eldest has a shuttle xp2500 system and my daughter has my old xp2500 system (512 corsair, 160gb ide, ti4200) and both already have 15" tft

but the little buggers keep arguing (2 boys) and wont share so instead of buying a setup for him i thought sod it, got the money so buy a sweet setup for myself and give him this

currently have the 3 pc's on lan, this is wired the other 2 are wireless... runescape is the cause btw (and pes5.. = another copy to buy plus pad and ps2 adaptor lol)

That spec is similar to mine.
I'll be waiting for conroe - because even the cheap-ish chip "E6600" is gonna be a hell of a clocker (as proven once too many times - to surpass even an FX60).

"Affordable cutting edge tech :)".

You might want to look at the Antec Super LANboy case with a couple of UV cold cathod. There should be more than enough money for decent DDR2 2gig rams and a TFT monitor - will try and conjure up a shopping list after my morning blues.

If you're not getting a monitor, it'll be even brilliant. Have watercooling! Nothing better than UV setup with Watercooling :) Look at the Swiftech Apex Ultra.

ermmmm water scares me lol :P

am debating the monitor issue, maybe keep this one and get son a cheaper 17" ;)

so conroe could be as fast as fx60, what is the cost comparison tho? (I know its early doors)

Water is not scary... it'll save you a lot more money coz it'll help you overclock for performance (depends on what type of Watercooling system).

i.e. a Conroe E6600 is about US$300ish. I'm placing bets on it selling about/under £300 here (better to overestimate than under). That can/will clock faster than an FX60 or even a FX62 - for that price, you'll save over £200 in performance gain (if you get water too.)

However, if you don't want water cooling, a decent air cooler e.g. Scythe Ninja can achieve similar clockings (but will obviously be slightly warmer).

That means you'll save over £350 compared to an FX62.

Conroe is very hyped and I really hope it does deliver and hope retail prices will not rise too much if Intel pull a Xbox360. If you can wait, wait till end of August when more benchmarks are out + better overclocking Motherboards are out.

Edit: AM2 FX62 (£704.94 Including VAT at 17.5%)

^ An E6600 would be a good place to start (2.4GHz, 4MB cache). Or if you have a healthy budget then you could consider the E6700 (2.67GHz, 4MB cache). Either of them should overclock well beyond 3GHz on air and whip the current FX series CPUs.

As for mobos, I haven't got a clue at the moment. Most Conroe mobos aren't out yet so you will have to wait a little bit longer. Having said that, the Intel "Bad Axe" mobo looks quite good, supports Conroe and is available to buy.

Welcome to the club :D

I've got that stashed away but I'm waiting till xmas. PC in spec destroys all the games I throw at it atm!

I have a similar setup, P4 3.4 + 1Gb ram, and I'm definitely waiting for conroe. I was waiting for AM2, all set to go AMD again, until the news of conroe broke.
I'll be getting the E6600 2.4Ghz and hoping for X6800 speeds (2.93Ghz) on air. The E6700 seems like a waste of money tbh, 70% dearer for a 10% performance boost.
