I'm toying with the idea of a new Skylake build.

It will be used for gaming only and I've not added a GPU since I will be using the 290 crossfire from my existing system (in sig) until the next cards come out next year.

This is what I've come up with so far:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - Retail £335.99
1 x Samsung SM951 512GB M.2 PCI-e 3.0 x 4 NVMe Solid State Drive (MZVPV512HDGL-00000) £289.99
1 x Asus Maximus VIII Hero Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £169.99
1 x EVGA SuperNova P2 1000W '80 Plus Platinum' Modular Power Supply (220-P2-1000-XR) £161.99
1 x Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit - Red (CMK16GX4M2B3200C16R) £145.99
1 x Phanteks Enthoo Luxe Full Tower Case - Black £119.99
1 x Noctua NH-D15S Dual Radiator Quiet CPU Cooler £65.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache HDD - OEM (WD1003FZEX) £64.99
1 x Zowie FK1 High Performance Gaming Mouse £49.99
1 x BitFenix Alchemy Premium Modding LED Strip - Connect Red 60cm £25.99
1 x Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound (8g) £3.95
Total : £1,434.85 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

Any thoughts?

I realise that x99 is also an option, but the way I see it, even if it does turn out that DX12 scales really well beyond 4 cores, I'm hoping the difference wont be too great anyway.

The 290x cards use the PCIe bus to talk so an x99 build with a 5930 or 5960 (not the 5920) should give you better performance as they support more PCI Express lanes.

Looks top notch mate, maybe worth going with a cheaper PSU that has more wattage, not that you'll need it though as 1000w is plenty :)

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA SuperNova G2 1300W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply (120-G2-1300-XR) £149.99
Total : £149.99 (includes shipping : Ex.VAT).

Or to save a bit more

Interesting, just looking and it seems platinum barely makes a difference, technically. Cheers, I may go for one of the cheaper options.

Yep, I've been mulling over x99 vs skylake for ages, it's a tricky one. I wouldn't imagine 8x would be much of a limitation for a 290 (non x) and for a new GPU next year I want to try to stick to a single card. Having said that though, I'm needing to drive a 4k screen.

I wonder if I should try to resist the urge to upgrade. Do we know when the next CPU release is? something like a year away? I guess I want to make sure that next years GPU upgrade has the best platform to run on and the IPC on skylake is pretty tempting... argh, decisions!
