Hey all!

Have a friend looking to upgrade from his old rig, currently a 970 and an older intel CPU.

Has a 4K 144hz monitor, but doesn't really play AAA games and isn't an FPS chaser, so not too worried about.

I know the new Nvidia release throws a bit of a spanner into the works, but looking to buy at the end of this month, and I can only imagine the 5070/ti are going to be a nightmare to get a hold of.

Saw this build from @Gray2233 in another recent thread, and wondering if something like the 7900XT will be worth going for rather than fussing trying to get a 5070 when they're released, due to the extra VRAM for 4k?

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,376.87 (includes delivery: £11.98)

As always, any help is greatly appreciated! :D

Hi.

Its a decent buildand certainly capable but for me the question is will you regret not waiting ,answer that and you've got your decision.

You still have till the end of the month pricing may change the other weak you could get a 7900xtx for £749 which is decent imo.

It's a difficult proposition at this point in the game, the current leaks/info on the new AMD cards suggests they'll offer about on par with the 7900XT and XTX for a lower (but probably scalped to higher) price. AMD doesn't feature lock the way Nvidia does either, but you might see performance parity with a VRAM drop by going that route.

I feel the 7900XT is probably a safe bet at its price point (£600), I do not think the Nvidia 4000 series is, I'd suggest waiting until preliminary reviews are out this month or so for the GPU.

Everything else is a pretty safe buy.

I don't think he will regret not waiting, as mentioned, he's not an FPS chaser..

Very much a "set and forget" type of gamer, who'd only really update once every 10 years, he's still relatively happy with this GTX970 to be honest but i've pestered him into upgrading haha

I'd wait. FSR isnt as good as dlss, and the new amd cards are switching to a new upscaler which uses ai upscaling, like dlss..it'n not backward compatible, so you'll be buying an out of date upscaler if you do...how long will that continue to get support and improved compared to the newer gen version
going by release of 4000 series nvidia cards, as long as you know you want a card, just buy it on launch day..they took a fair few hours to sell out so you'll have an opportunity I think. AMD they just said launching in Q1...so not that informative tbh

regarding above build, riptide mobo has no wifi (don't know if you need that)..if you do I'd prob plumb for something like the msi B650M gaming plus wifi for £149.99 (OCuk don't have it)..make sure it'sthe gaming plus, not just the gaming wifi..the gaming plus has much better vrms..

below good to look through, and then find one you like and weigh up cost differences
