Hi Folks, I'm looking at getting a 22" monitor to replace my 17" and was wondering about a couple of things....

I know there's another thread on this but it doesn't quite answer my issue.

I mostly use my desktop for web surfing, photo editing and general pratting around and watching TV series etc. I don't game much but when I do I like my games to look good (currently loving Far Cry2 :) ).

My question is:

If I won't be plugging in a PS3, BlueRay etc, am not bothered about letterboxing and purely use it as a computer monitor is there much point on going 16:9 1080?

I know some people complain about text size but I'm used to using my old 14.1" Dell D610 on 1400x 1050 and quite like it.

Also, I want a good contrast ratio as I like my blacks black so have been eying up the Asus VH226H as it looks pretty sweet for the price.

I'm on 1080p (16:9) myself and personally I don't have a problem with the text size as I sit directly in front of the monitor, everything looks a whole lot sharper than my previous 17" monitor.

Unless you sit a good distance away from the monitor I honestly don't see it being a problem.

Yeah, don't mind tiny text and it seems that most of the decent contrast ones are 1080p in my price bracket (£150ish -£200) was just wondering if it does funny things to games etc as some won't have 16:9 as standard resolutions.

i've borrowed a DGM 24" VA (1920x1200) from my mate in the past, and have recently bought the S2409W (1920x1080)

honestly didn't notice the difference in size

the dell is a really nice panel for the money :)

very happy with it

The Dells do look nice but are a little out of my price range, plus I'm looking more at the 22" as I'll be sitting fairly close I it'll be on my desk.

Can anyone comment on the res for gaming in 16:9?

16:9 gaming is really good for me so far. Been playing Left 4 Dead, TF2, CSS, HL1 with no problems. I'm generally quite impressed with the overall quality of gaming at 1920x1080 tbh, on a 22".

I read a few things about people saying there wasn't the support for 16:9 but I haven't had a problem yet.

Others might have different experiences I suppose.

Cool! Cheers! :)

i bought mine purely for gaming

even Half Life 1 can display 1920x1080, so i wouldn't worry about that :)

Sorrry to hijack thread but with a 22-24" monitor does the monitor have to have a HDMI slot or will a standard VGA/DVI slot do for watching blu-ray if I buy a blu-ray drive?

Would love to be able to watch some blu rays in my PC room when the missus is watching coronation street etc.

DVI can handle HD pictures but it doesn't support sound.

To watch HD on your PC you need a HD graphics card, HD DVD software, HD player and a HD monitor (with either DVI or HDMI input). You need to get a HDCP capable monitor and graphics card if you want to watch protected content too.

There may be ways around stuff I don't know about, but that's as much as I know atm anyway :)
