Hi, some bloke at work is selling the following for £20. Is it any good? I can't seem to find any real info on it. I'm looking at expanding my network as its currently: a cable modem + 4port linksys router + 4port router (acting as a switch).

16-port 10/100Mbps NWay Switch
100Link/ACT Light
10Link/ACT Light
Model No: SOHO-SW16B

All I've managed to glean is the following which, apart from then no. 16 doesn't mean too much to me!

"16 10/100Mbps NWay Ethernet ports 1 10/100Mbps NWay MDI-II Uplink port Full/half duplex transfer mode for each port Wire speed reception and transmission Store-and-Forward switching method Integrated address Look-Up Engine, supports 16K absolute MAC addresses Supports 512Kbytes RAM for data buffering Extensive front-panel diagnostic LEDs Broadcast storm protection IEEE 802.3x flow control for full-duplex Back pressure flow control for half-duplex Supports three QoS levels checked IP Header and 802.1Q VLAN Tag and/or selected per port basis"

Should I walk away?

Thanks,

z

Check if it has a fan because that could cause you problems. Also you could buy a 5 port gigabit swtich for the same money off a certain auction site.

Sounds alright if you have a lot of gear on your network. But if you can afford it, upgrade your network to gigabit ;)

Thanks for all your input guys. I'll get some more info from the guy.

I've not really delved into the world of > 4ports so I might stump up some extra cash and get a better one.

I've got cat5e cables installed around the house. Can that handle gigabit? I guess I'd have to check the network cards on the pc's to make sure they are capable.

Thanks,
z
