Hi

Funds are limited due to being out of work and am looking for a upgrade to sort me out for the time being.

Was looking at second hand stuff, but now considering the FX-4 4100 to be the base for an upgrade.

Need

CPU - Quad core
Motherboard,
Ram - at least 4GB maybe 8Gb?
DVD-RW drive, since well the new boards all appear to be SATA unless there a way to convert a PATA drive into SATA.

Going to be used for gaming, max res is 1600x1200
Also for running vmware, so need the extra cores.

Cheers

well there is two options found for the convert of PATA to SATA, ranging in cost from £10 to £20 but for that price better off getting a SATA DVD-RW drive.

Is it possible to overclock on the cheaper motherboards? Or is it something best not done?

You can, the CPU has an unlocked multiplier so just increase this ratio in the BIOS.

But looking at this - http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-fx-8150--8120-6100-and-4100-performance-review/1 - a older PhenomII X4 955/965BE will be faster.

You're best off saving up until you can afford a complete system upgrade tbh, buying in bits you will just find yourself at a loss. And also what PSU do you have atm?

EDIT: If your intent was getting all of they above NEED parts then ignore me, just woke up.

Athlon XP....DDR memory.
Rubbish really.

mmm

done some playing around on the site.

Would this work?

That works, but if your PC is really crap and you want to do some gaming?

How about Llano?

Would really recommend getting a board like the one stulid has mentioned. That asus board limits you to 95Watt cpus, as well as 2 stiscks of ram.

What CPUs are 95watt? is all the bulldozer range above 95watt?

Thought that the llano was something to aviod, I've allready got a pcie graphic card that I intend to use.

Main use though is going to be for vmware as well as when I get a job for it to become ubuntu pc.....

2sticks with 8gb should last for awhile though...

it is a HD 3000 series, exact model escapes me now. Though was thinking about getting a another graphic card later for about £60+ to go onto this system and then moving the HD3000 back onto the original motherboard in another pc...
