Hi,

I want an extra set of keys for the gf's Toyota Yaris (mk1, facelift, 2004). My local Toyota dealer is offering it for £160! They say it breaks down to £110 for the key, and £50 to program it.

Does this sound right?

Thank you :)

You can get the blanks much much cheaper, then get them cut and programmed and save a big chunk of that.

I was quoted £280 for a key for teh Jag, I got the blade done elsewhere and got it down to about £160

Pretty sure my dad paid the same for a laguna keycard.

£100-120 for the key and £40-60 to code to the car which they make seem like something from mission impossible.

Yep about right, i know its 200 for an audi A3 as one of my work mates is trying to get a new one at the moment, my dad paid 120 for one for his renault kangoo as well.

If its just a key with the transponder you can get them quite a bit cheaper.

If it includes a remote lock then yep, its about that I think

Most vehicle-centric locksmiths have the cutting tech and programming tech, allowing them to undercut dealers and thus make an actual living. I'd always go to a Lockie, even over something simple that Timpsons might do.

Timpsons do them, I had my Shogun done for about £40

But, that was the key and the transponder, not including a remote

Remotes are generally a dealer only thing, hence the high price , but depends on the car, the price sounds about (unfortunately) normal for a proper key and remote.

Glad I drive a ford then. I paid about £6 for a keyblank off ebay, then £20ish for a 2nd hand fob and a few quid for a transponder, coded it myself and got the key cut at local cobblers for about a fiver.

I can beat that (sort of), got a spare fob for my old Integra off ebay for £3 and managed to program it myself, job jobbed. The joys of an aftermarket alarm system.
