16000 baud speeds with BT 8Mb (beware, Rant)

I've reached my limit with BT, this is the last ****ing straw!
all i'm trying to do is a little browsing when the chop the speed of my connection down to a completely pointless 200 BYTES per second!

what the hell?!? two hundred bytes per second? it'd be faster to bloody phone the webserver and write down every individual bit!

i'd be somewhat understanding if i were only paying 10pounds a month for this connection, but 30 quid a month for this, frankly pathetic speed is pointless.

i'm going to be calling BT on monday and giving every bleeding person i speak to one hell of an earfull.
contract-schmontract, providing me with sub 56kb/s speeds is almost certainly a breach of contract and i want out!

i live in london, i CAN get Be* 24Mb in my house. this stupid contract with BT has prevented me from doing so.

Just to Clarify, its STILL as slow as it was last night.

Sub 56k speeds is indeed breaking your contract.

Send an official complaint to BT via recorded delivery letter, stating that you'll be contacting Ofcom if you don't get a resolution within two weeks. Should set the ball rolling.
 
Isn't that 1600 baud? :(

That's absolutely ridiculous. Can you query your router to see if you're getting loads of errors? There's no way that anything BT do should give you 0.2kB/s.
 
Have you tried things like checking the stats on the router to see if there errors also if you can remember your line stats are they the same, rebooted the router, reset the router to defaults etc...
 
BT are having problems right now and have been for a few days/a week.

I got ****ed off with it and phoned up today, the internet just seems to cut out every half hour or so, then take another hour before my router can connect (just an example).

the forums are the only site that i can access because they take up so little bandwidth.

it takes about 2 minutes to load every page.

i've just tried to see if there are any unsecured wireless points within reach that i can latch on to, but there aren't any. all the nearby points have been secured :(

Why? It's not their fault.

It could be a problem at the exchange, a problem with the cable running from the exchange to your house or yeah, it could even be a problem at BT's end.

But, speaking to them like they're pieces of **** isn't going to do you any favours.

in person i'm far more mild mannered than i pretend to be on the internet, in reality i would almost certainly have asked about the cause of the problem before causing a ruckus.

anyway, i've drafted up a letter to send to BT, would you guys please give it a readthrough for me?

Dear British Telecom
On Sunday the 27th at 2:00AM, the internet connection that you supply appeared to disconnect. WebPages of all any kind appeared to stop loading. In response to this not infrequent occurrence, I checked the control panel of my router, which informed me that my connection was still active, indeed, upon further inspection, I was in fact able to load some WebPages at a paltry speed of roughly two hundred and fifty bytes per second (250B/s), one four-thousandth (1/4000) of the rated speed of the connection that you claim to supply.

Being a Business customer, I have been paying £30 per month for this connection for over 6 years, having originally started out with a 512Kb/s connection. I have not begrudged paying above-the-odds for this connection, even when other proprietors are offering the same services for half of what I pay. Believing the extra cost represented an extra level of service provided. Certainly, for many years my connection has been unceasing and fast.

However, in the past few months, I have noticed my connection dropping frequently; sometimes up to once per hour. This is an extreme inconvenience for me and everyone else using the internet here, with me personally having to cease my work in order to manually reconnect by accessing my router directly. Additionally, rather frequently my connection has dropped in speed, sometimes down to just fifty kilobytes per second (50KB/s), often for hours at a time, often between noon and the late evening, when the connection is most needed.

But, this latest reduction in speed is the final straw, so to say. I have been completely unable to connect to any remote servers for any purpose, via any connection method, be it HTTP or FTP. The reduction in speed would have been understandable had it lasted just a few hours, but at the time of writing this message I have been without internet for twenty four (24) hours.

This, I find, is a breach of the contract I agreed to regarding the provision of internet service to me, a cessation of which is now appropriate. I will be taking my business elsewhere.

I was going to say, mine has stopped acting up as of last night.

You wouldnt have gotten to a real person with the number i phoned. But it did clearly state that there was a problem that they were trying to fix.

They may come back to you and say you have a virus or something, or something may have changed on your internal network could be worth adding that nothing has and that you have no virus and stuff on your machine- just so they have no come back:)
