1600mhz memory. Time for an upgrade?

Hi folks,

Admittedly I'm a bit out of the loop with memory, so after some advice.

I've got a fairly high spec system built in the mining craze, based around a 2600k running at 4.6ghz, and 3x 290s, but when I built it, I stuck with the memory I had which is 8gb of corsair vengeance 1600mhz ddr3.

Recently playing on GTA V, I'm getting noticeable drops in frames, so am starting to think it may be time to upgrade the memory. The stuff I have is getting on a bit, and whilst fine for when I'm doing any design work, it may be causing a bottleneck in games. Maybe. Like I say, I'm not sure how much better faster ram is compared to this 4-5 year old stuff I have.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I cant really see having faster ram any benefit to be honest. Ive got 2400Mhz stuff but only as ut was the cheapest 8gb kit available when I got my board/ram.

Whats it like in other games? Could be that particular game not having a decent crossfire profile.

To be fair with 3x290s I'd probably upgrade to 16GB, it won't make much difference but that Kingston 2400Mhz kit is a bargain so I'd go for that.

Other games are fine really. This one does seem to eat up RAM though which is why the thought entered my mind. Gets to around 7gb usage including background apps.

Might just have to man up and format the SSD so I can fit it on there to see if that helps.

Unless you are running out of ram, you really wont see any noticeable improvements in FPS in most games.

That being said a few games do benefit from faster RAM. Arma 3 being one of them. I'm not sure if GTA benefits but something to check out I guess!

Ram with tighter timings will give better results than faster loose timing ram. But as mentioned in game you will see no difference.

I made space on the SSD and moved it. It has improved quite dramatically really. Still can't fully max it out and having some bizarre GPU usage, but it's close enough and is running at 60fps for 95% of the time.

Thanks for the input : )

Faster memory will make no noticeable difference.

This i went from 1600mhz to 2666 due to people saying it can and being a big arma 3 player and people mentioning the faster ram helps i gained a 0fps increase, from what i can tell faster ram has helped nothing. was a waste of cash imo..... tbh i would at this point not go for a 16gb kit. when playing GTA V with everything on max i have maxed out my 8gb.
