1600X or 1700

I would get the R5 1600X - I suspect it will actually consume less power than a R7 1700X or R7 1800X at the same clockspeeds and voltages meaning you could get away with a cheaper motherboard, and 6 cores will be enough especially if AMD and MS can get SMT to work more consistently in games.

Use the £80 saved and get a better graphics card.

I would be keen to see if there is also a 1600 (-x) and if that is that same level of bargain that the 1700 is turning out to be.

Actually, there is one non-X 6C SKU which was rumoured to be around $230.

Build us a bundle mate, I'm leaning toward CBA on OCing the 1700 :)
I have actually completed the testing for two approved bundles I am just waiting till around 18th to launch when we have stock of cooler brackets that I need.

No point to launch without decent cooling. Maybe we do pre order a couple of days before.

I do want to get off this old 2500k, but I'm not that desperate and am waiting for Ryzen 6-core units to be out and benchmarked and overclocked before choosing.

Hoping that losing 2 cores will allow them more thermal and OCing headroom, since a most of what I do only really wants 1-2 threads anyway, but there's a handful of cases where I max all 4 and wish for more :) If it doesn't turn out to OC any faster at all, then I'll get an 8-core because why not?

Are you able to give us any info on what memory and chip speeds are going to be available on an 8 pack bundle - or do we need to wait for you to release them?

1700 any day, 70$ difference, worth the extra 2 cores / 4 threads

+1 your either in the 4 cores is enough mindset or in the more cores is better one and if so 8/16 cores/threads is logically better then 6c12 cores/threads for a little more dosh. However with some of the motherboard issues it does make sence for some to wait and see

Just wait and see. Seems like I need to test more memory options first before I launch these anyway.

Good stuff, I'm only interested in B350 though, don't need half the stuff on the X370. Will there be B350/1700 combo pre OC options?

Thanks

I was also looking at the B350 boards as im more into video editing and never really play games so im looking for something cheap

.

You need to be very weary of getting too much into all the MOAR cores hype - even AMD wants its CPUs to be tested at GPU limited resolutions, and people within one week have gone from a 4C/8T CPU is enough to YOU NEED 8C/16T for gaming, ignoring the fact that many of the Ryzen results have SMT causing some regressions. Once SMT gets fixed the MT performance should get better, and with the 6C/12T version apparently starting at $230/£230 onwards, thats a lot of money that can be put into you graphics card when you upgrade it. If you even looked back at the FX6300 vs FX8300 series, you could see the former were just easier to cool when overclocked since they drew less power, and you could generally get away with lower end motherboards too.

Edit!!

Also I expect when Ryzen 2 launches, you will see the 6C models of that range matching the 8C models of the first release, since IPC and average clockspeed will go up.

thanks, defo not waiting for ryzen 2 I'm still on my 8350, its been great but I want higher minimums in BF1 and any other games I play

won't the new Xbox have an 8 core ryzen cpu? Makes me think it might be worth while having one in my desktop

If you have an FX8350 even a 4C/8T Ryzen would be an upgrade, but what I am saying is that a 6C will be enough - its just the lowish per core performance on your CPU not the number of threads which is why you have an issue.

It also means you have nearly £100 to plonk on your future card,or another SSD for games, etc.

If you are going to overclock then my bet would be on the 1700. I doubt the 1600x will overclock much higher then what we have seen from the current Ryzen CPUs and even if it does it won't be enough to justify losing 4 cores.

If you don't want to overclock ever then the choice is tougher i guess since the stock 1700 is clocked pretty low for a gaming CPU.

I planned to wait for the r5 but my 8120 is getting extremely long in the tooth being 6years old... I went for the 1700 and i dont have an oz of regret not waiting for the 1600x

I dont think the clock speeds matter half as much as what they did 7-8yrs ago, its not like it will struggle is it?

How important is that £80 to you? I wouldn't wait tbh. Just get something now and enjoy it. The R5 certainly won't be better. Overclocking's gonna take you 10mins to do.
