165 memory controller's any good?

Just wanted to know if anyone has had any problems running dividers with the 165's? The memory I have now is fine but if I go to 2gb I'll probably have to use dividers. I was gonna go with the x2 3800 because of the 10 multiplier but I really fancy the Opty for the extra cache. By the way I'd be super happy if I got 2.5-2.6ghz out of any of them but I hear the Opty's have a better chance?

I have no problems with 2GB Gskill PC4000 on a 165. As the DDR is 250Mhz. Timings are a little slack though at 3-4-4-8 1T.
I can theoretically get to 2.7Ghz on the 166 (333) divider which has always been robust without exceeding the 250Mhz DDR rating. Some boards have an issue with the 133 (266) divider but that is fixed with a BIOS update.

Most DC opterons seem to hit 2.6Ghz however the lottery is how much voltage with resulting heat you need to do it. Put the effort into getting a good heatsink and good cooling through your case at the start and all should be well.

2.6Ghz @1.45v = 53C under load in a cool room with the stock cooler. I expect it would crack 60C if the heating was on full blast so I have an Thermal Take big Typhoon on the way.

Thanks for the reply mate. To be honest I'd be chuffed with 2.5Ghz as I'm using a laptop at the minute and anything around that area would blow me away:) I hear what your saying about the voltage though. I guess it's partly down to luck as you say.

Decto put it nicely.

I only have 1Gb of ram and so far have pushed it to 2.4Ghz using the 333 divider (mem at 220fsb). It has more in it but want to stay around stock voltage until I get my layout sorted (cabling) and something like the Sythe ninja for better cooling.

Full load so far doesnt exceed 45c which for the stock cooler seems great. As im running a boinc project the cores are constantly being used and id like to keep the temps down for 24/7 useage.

I can step down divider to get more cpu speed but then id be seriously slowing my RAM down. Plenty more left to overclock I just havnt got time to do all the stability testing for now.

The memory controllers on Opterons are comparatively very good. You'd be extremely unlucky to get a 165/170 that wouldn't do 2.5Ghz+. The 170 has come down in price and the 10x multiplier should mean you may be able to run 1:1 with good memory.
