Hi I have my NEC 20" monitor connected using vga and on a fresh install of windows vista I was not able to set the resolution to 1680x1050, infact I don't think I was able to set it to any widescreen resolutions with the maximum selectable one being 1600x1200. I managed to get it working at 1680x1050 using powerstrip but surely there is an easier way?

Did you download and install the correct video card drivers?

It's unlikely but if you did maybe they're too old and don't have support for 1680x1050.

I think the monitor drivers are to blame as I have the latest video drivers. The monitor driver being used is something like 'generic 1600x1200 panel' but when I try to update it says that the driver is not a better match than the one currently installed. Is there anyway to force it to install a new driver?

If you are using an nVidia card do a google for "nVidia custom resolution" which should bring up a guide on how to manually add the resolution to the res chooser. Seems like the EDID block isn't being sent correctly over your VGA cable.

philjohn's comment about the EDID info is probably correct so it's likely the cause of the problem.

If you have an ATI graphics card, the Catalyst Control Panel defaults the max resolution to 1600x1200 but you can change it in the Monitor Properties -> Attributes section to 1680x1050 (and you'll see in there also if the EDID info is missing).
