Hi, i am having some troubles on a picking out a new monitor, the trouble i am having is between the 2 screen sizes, 22" or 24". My main concern is if 1900x1200 will be too much for games and will it mean i have to upgrade more often to play new games.

My PC atm is quite new, i have a 800GTS 512, but i only have a normal 19" monitor. My main use of this pc is for games such as fps and mmo's.

I have looked at reviews of my gfx card and in some games the fps at the resolutions dont change but then in some 1900x1200 takes a considerable hit.

What i really want to know is it a bit too early to be moving to a resolution such as 1900x1200 or is it better to have the performance gain at 1680x1050 (if there is a considerable one).

Thanks for any replies.

Gaming at 1680x1050 is fine for most people. 24" screens are getting much cheaper now, but IMHO are a bit too big. I am happy with 22" and see no need to go higher.

I game at 1680x1050 on my 24 inch Dell monitor caus i find using 1900x1200 causes me not to be able to take in everything on the screen when im playing fps games. I get the monitor to centre the image so it isnt stretched to fit the whole screen. Dude get the 24 incher watching movies and stuff is much more enjoyable on the bigger screen.

I'd rather have the 24", even if you lower the resolution to 1680x1050 ingame, the extra desktop space is brilliant, and the price difference is getting smaller now, especially with most of the OcUK special 24" monitor seeming to be rather good, with a couple of off ones (like any monitor). I wouldnt buy a 22" either, as effectively they're just a stretched 20" and don't look as good.

As long as you don't mind dumping AA on stuff like Crysis, 1920x1200 seems playable with everything I've thrown at the card, and thats before I change processor to stop the annoying minumum framerate cpu hold back Im getting sometimes.
Without AA that card can take everything at 1920x1200 right now, and my minimum fps in COD4 with everything on max and 4xAA even with cpu limitation has been about 45.

The only caveat is if you sit too close to the screen, I sit about half a metre away from mine due to the desk the screen is on sticking out, but 24" definately does feel 'right' once you get used to it, and is much more immersive than a 20" lcd (or a 19" CRT) from experience.

Got a 20", bought the 22" and didn't seem much of a upgrade in size, will probably get a 24", desktop set to native, games 1680x1050, older games to native.

Could use my 40" 1920x1080 too, if I upgade the Ht display later on. 24" is too small then :-D

Yeah i usual game at 1680x1050 on new games on my Dell 24inch monitor, and play older games at 1920x1200

Thanks for the replies guys,

The monitor i am looking at is the w2408h, i know this maybe should in the monitor forum but its a bit dead :p, the reviews i read on it says that the interpolation on it is excellent, how do you guys find going from the native res on the 24"s to 1680x1050 - does it still fill the screen or create black lines around the picture?

I believe dell monitor upscales the image if your not using native, or the GFX card does, cant remember off the top of my head. Anyway if fills the whole screen out, dont really notice too much off a difference between 1920x1200 and 1680x1050 when gaming, but you can tell a slight difference, anything lower than 1680x1050 however you would quite blatantly be able to tell a difference

My Philips has a Native/stretch with aspect/stretch modes, these are pretty useful - want 24" monitors have these modes?

I game at 1680x1050 on my 24 inch Dell monitor also! I couldn't go back to a smaller screen now even though I have a great quality sony 1024 monitor gathering dust.

Hi Dubb, I been gaming at 1920x1200 for two and half years and yes its been an uphill struggle since day one to get an 'affordable' GPU that can cope with the big res, I have to say though its been worth it, just blew me away but then I did come straight from a 19" CRT.

I'm not sure a 22" monitor is such a good thing? I thought that res was best on a 20"? All your doing by moving up to a 22" is getting bigger pixels?

Maybe you should be considering either a 20" 1680x1050 LCD or perhaps go all the way and get a 24" 1920x1200? As already mentioned the desktop real estate is very nice as is watching movies and the like.

thats exactly what I do.. in the nvidia control panel there's an option for flat panel scaling and if you turn it on it stretches the image, if you turn it off it places it at native res in the middle with black bands around it.

I have an 8800GTX but do 1680x1050 as it means I can normally have everything up full and 1920x1200 is just too much to take in normally lol!

1920x1200 scores if you ever want to play 1920x1080 video from HDDVD or BluRay on your PC rather than an HDTV. I bought my Dell 2405 for that, and it worked out pretty well, but it's certainly been a bit of a struggle on the gaming side.
