I'm in the middle of building a new rig, which will just be for PC gaming and the web, nothing else.

I have a smallish desk and was looking at getting a Dell 2209wa, I prefer 16:10 ratio as opposed to 16:9, I've used a Dell u2311h and it's a nice screen but I just find it too wide.

The only thing putting me off buying the 2209wa is the resolution of 1680x1050, I've never used this resolution before, my current PC that I've had for 5 years now has a 17" 5:4 ratio 1280x1024 resolution. I'm concerned I might regret it.

Thanks.

First, let me say the 2209WA is an excellent monitor. I know three people who have one and have spend a fair amount of time using my sister's and it is a truly great monitor to use (I have used it for a mix of gaming, video and standard desktop stuff).

To put my feelings in context - the resolution of my primary monitor at home is 1920x1200, and moving to a 2209WA didn't feel like much of a downgrade. If you are moving up from a 1280x1024 monitor then it will feel pretty great. If you are worried about gaming compatibility with the resolution then don't worry - in my experience all games that work with widescreen monitors have 1680x1050 as one of the standard resolutions.

Thanks cmndr_andi for your reassuring reply, I'm more confident about it now, although I have also been considering buying a larger desk and getting the 24" variant of Samsungs new PLS monitors, but the lack of information on these monitors is frustrating.

I've been trying to piece together my new rig since October last year and I seem to be always waiting for new items to be released, first Sandybridge, then the new Intel SSD's and now these PLS monitors.

I also have a 22'' Dell at 1680x1050 and find it great, not experienced any games that don't support that res. I have same problem that a decent sized monitor supporting full-hd wouldn't fit on the desk very well.

I have a Samsung 223bw 21.5inch running at max res of 1680*1050 and its awesome, I went from a 5:4 setup on a 17inch and the 21.5 is so much more comfortable to look at and games are no problem, Best upgrade I have made in years!

As usual andi sums things up very well.

I have two 2209WA and think they're a fantastic bit of kit.

Andi and I have championed this monitor numerous times - but on this particular thread - link - i think we covered most of the 2209WA benefits and screen quality.
