I'm after 16GB of DDR3 1600Mhz memory for a build I'm looking at doing. I've looked at the corsair vengeance but I think with a gelid tranquillo cooler that they will be too high, and I've looked at the Kingston HyperX Blu and Genesis. Looking at both of these, I cant really tell a difference.

A website has some of the Kingston Hyper X Blu running at 1600Mhz at 1.65v for £31. The genesis also seem to run at 1.65v, which gives me the impression that their overclocked.

I don't want to spend a fortune on the RAM, so was wondering if anyone could recommend either of these, or an alternative :)

I thought I'd mentioned the low profile. Having looked at these I they're a little more expensive that the Kingston but they seem to run at 1600mhz at 1.5v which is what I want really.

Can get them 2 black and 2 blue as well which I think would like pretty neat.

Is there any performance restriction using 16gb ram over 8gb? Regarding overclocking on an i5 etc?

Slightly more on populating all four slots usually. But it's unlikely to be a massive difference, 1 or 2 on the multiplier in all likelihood.

I know, but looking at the HyperX it seems as though they run at 1.65v. And there's £7 delivery charge on top

In terms of overclocking the CPU, memory doesn't really matter with sandy bridge - since the BCLK (FSB) always remains at 100MHz, but the memory and CPU multiplier are varied independently. Therefore you can happily run your memory at 1600MHz while the CPU sits at 4.5GHz.

As for performance between 9-9-9-27 vs 9-9-9-24 the difference in real-world performance will be imperceptible in almost all cases. This article shows the difference between different memory speeds and timings (including a few different 1600MHz kits with vastly different timings) when used with a sandy bridge CPU.

Think I'm gonna get the Corsair vengeance low profile, 2 x 4gb black and 2 x 4gb blue, hopefully they will look good together :)

That link you provided the OP, it's for Dual Channel memory, I'd say go for Triple Channel IMO

This one Same price, same brand

Aye, but the OP asked for 16GB, not 12GB - which suggests he is using a board that is dual channel (or quad channel) and not triple channel. If he installed a 12GB (3x4GB) kit in a dual channel board (like a P67 or Z68) then it couldn't run in triple channel mode (since the board doesn't support it) and may well only run in single channel mode due to there being different numbers of DIMMs per channel.

The OP didn't specify which motherboard he is using, therefore in that case:

@Mawat what motherboard are you using and is it Dual/Triple channel?

Also, you specified that you don't want overclocked RAM, the above are all overclocked

He's looking at a Sandy Bridge build:

My Custom Build - Recommendations?

Project One (Budget)

So dual channel it is ;)

The RAM is only "oveclocked" because the Intel supported specification for Sandy Bridge only goes up to 1333MHz and the JDEC specification only goes up to 1333MHz.

All 1600MHz involves is changing a couple of BIOS settings.

1600MHz is the price/performance sweet spot for Sandy Bridge.
