16GB RAM Sticks

Hi,

I've got an MSI X79A GD45 Motherboard which is LGA 2011- It supports DDR3 RAM-But there are only 4 slots for the memory instead of 8 like on Asus P9X79

I've read the manual and it can accept 64GB RAM [if the BIOS is updated maybe]-maybe this isn't needed - But the problem is I've not found 16GB memory sticks - They may be expensive but where can i get some from?

I'd be looking for a kit of 4 X 16GB - Along the lines of Corsair, Kingston - or any other good alternatives? [suggestions?]

Thanks

AFAIK there aren't really any 16GB DDR3 DIMMs available in the consumer space. Crucial do a few Registered DDR3 DIMMs aimed at the server market.

Unless you really need 64GB RAM you'll likely be limited to 32GB on that platform and tbh 32GB should be sufficient for most general use and gaming for the time being. By the time you actually need 64GB the rest of platform will be due an overhaul... unless you got a specific requirement for 64GB (i.e. 3D rendering, etc)? Last time I looked only Corsair were selling 16GB DDR4 DIMMs for Skylake/X99, but the number of brands selling 16GB DDR4 DIMMs will increase in future.

Of course you are correct - 32 GB is very substantial - I'll have a look at the DDR4 just to see the developments - Thanks for the reply - I bought an i7 3930k and had built an Asus P9x79 Pro motherboard with max RAM 64 GB - There were 8 memory slots for DDR3 RAM.

The trouble is I bought more than one CPU - I wish I hadn't on one hand but managed to buy the MSI X79A GD45 board in an open box for just over £100 which was a good price for X79 - The whole point of LGA 2011 was to allow for 64 GB RAM.

The MSI board can support 64GB RAM which is why I'm asking here but I'll leave it at 32 GB

Socket 1150 is much better value with the i7 4790K being not that much slower than i7 3930k whilst being £200 cheaper - and the heatsink as well is extra on 2011 as there isn't one included -

Think of it as an upgrade path. If 32gb isn't enough for whatever you do in the future, then 16gb sticks will probably be avaliable them
