16ms ping with Netgear and 10ms with Speedtouch?

Just received my new router from Netgear, but while I was waiting I had to use my old Speedtouch modem.

Now after plugging back in my Netgear my connection seems to have risen 6ms in ping time?

What could be the cause of this?

It could be a number of reasons, but it's very possible that the Netgear just prioritises ping lower than the Speedtouch does. Ping isn't a performance measuring tool, it's a quick diagnostics tool.
