16x PCI express problem.

I have just upgraded from a HD-7850 to a GTX-670, and my problem is that the 670 won't work in the 16x pci-e slot, but will work in the 8x slot.

The 7850 worked fine in the 16x slot, so it's not like the slot is dead.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bios is up to date and I done a full reformat to make sure nothing was left over from AMD.

The 670 works like a dream in the the 8x slot, it's just slower than what it would be in the 16x. I would really like to get it working in the x16 slot if at all possible.

so what exactly happens when you try it in the x16 slot..?

The computer boots to windows as normal but there is no display to the monitors.

I was about to RMA the card until as a last resort I tried it in the 8x slot and it worked. Good job really as OC would have just sent it back to me with a bill for postage.

I have to say I love this card though. No going back to AMD for me.

On further examination I have just noticed that the back of the card is hard down on the G-seta ports. The card looks to be seated okay, but I can't help wondering if its prevented going all the way home due to the G-seta port.

If that's the problem I can't see any way around it.

I could always try filing down the top of the G-seta port. It's only a bit of plastic.
If I'm careful it should be okay.

latest beta bios,worth a try and might fix the 16x slot and that card,if not you can always flash back

flash using usb stick and qflash

This is a UEFI bios. I don't know how to install or configure this, I am use to Award Bios.

Would it bugger up my windows install, would I need to reformat?

You mean SATA right and not "G-seta"?

If you look at the slot, does it looks like the card is firmly in or maybe slightly angled out from the SATA ports possibly pushing the card out?

Have you tried connecting a monitor to the onboard GPU to see if you can see the card being picked up in Device Manager?

I filed flat the plastic nub on top of the seta port and the card seated with room to spare, but still did not work.

I connected one of my monitors to the onboard GPU HDMI and the other to my 670. The onboard HDMI worked. It should only work if NO external GPU is detected. So that shown me that my 670 wasn't being detected while in the x16 slot.

So now I have moved on to suspecting my bios to be the culprit, there is only one bios higher than the one I have but that is this new UEFI thing, and I'm not to sure about flashing that to my motherboard, it looks to be a monster with big teeth.
From what I have read about UEIF is that it will break my windows install, and I don't have a clue how to re-install using this new bios.

Make sure in Bio's your set to GPU an not the one the 2500k on board.

No problem, it's set to pcie x16. When in the x8 slot I set it to pcie x8. intel onboard GPU is set to "only if NO external GPU detected"

Well I flashed the latest UEFI bios fine. The bios supports gen 2 and 3 graphic cards but the x16 slot still does not work.

I also tried the card in a older computer that had a x16 pcie and it worked faultlessly.

Only thing left is the socket on my mobo must be at fault, but unfortunately it's just out of warranty. So it looks like a new motherboard is on the cards. I think I will go for a MSI board this time as Gigabyte seem to be slipping of late.

Anyway, a big thank you to everyone who posted help here, we nearly fixed it.
